"Alex Smith is our quarterback." Mike Singletary said it, and no one believed him. Then with Jimmy Clausen on the board, the San Francisco 49ers trade up to get Anthony Davis, a left tackle out of Rutgers. Then, at No. 17 overall—with Clausen still on the board—the 49ers select...a guard, Mike Iupati. Mike Singletary and the 49ers management have made a strong statement.
They believe in their star players, and their players at the skill positions. It looks as if, not only will Alex Smith start, throw to last years' first round pick Michael Crabtree, and hand off to Frank Gore and Glen Coffee, but they'll do it with greatly improved protection. Both Davis and Iupati should start in the preseason, and last until their careers finish.
This should solidify the line in front of a young QB, a young RB, with young WR's on the outside. The 49ers and Seahawks could make the next five to 10 years in the NFC West very interesting if the Seahawks can find a QB that can stay healthy. If not, perhaps Bradford brings the Rams back into contention at some point and challenges the 49ers for what is now their division to lose in my opinion. What a great first round they had.
