Defense Wins Championships...Rex Ryan Thinks So, Jets Sign Jason Taylor

Daniel KablackApr 20, 2010

When Rex Ryan left the Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator position to become the head coach of the New York Jets, everyone knew the Jets would have a new, "defense first" look about them.

On Tuesday he only added to that philosophy when the Jets announced that they've acquired six-time Pro-Bowler Jason Taylor from the free agent market.

The NFL's all-time leader in fumble return touchdowns will add extra height and depth to the Jets' linebacker core.

This comes just a few years after Taylor's interesting remarks about the Jets.

After getting beat in Miami in 2007, Taylor told the media, "They suck, too. They beat us. They'll go home happy, and their fans will be happy that they got three wins this year."

When he returned a fumble for a touchdown against the Jets later that season, his words were, "To score a touchdown in New York against the Jets in the last time I'll be in the hellhole they call a stadium up there before they get rid of it and move to the new one, it was outstanding."

It will be very interesting to see how his relationship with Jets fans will pan out over the course of the next season.

In the mean time, Jets head coach Rex Ryan told Taylor he will be seeing many reps when he takes the field on the Jets defense.

Taylor will likely play both defensive end and outside linebacker. His 6'6" frame makes him a dominating force in both the pass rush and coverage positions.

All-time, Taylor has recorded 362 tackles, 127.5 sacks, eight interceptions and six fumble returns for touchdowns.

Taylor recorded a Dolphins record 18.5 sacks in one season with Miami in 2002.

Jason Taylor also made the finals in the television series Dancing with the Stars .
