Was Arsene Wenger's Worst Mistake of the Season Loaning Out Phillipe Senderos?

Callum D'SouzaApr 20, 2010

As Wigan stunned the footballing world alike with three goals in 10 minutes to defeat Arsenal 3-2, many were quick to pounce on the error made by keeper Lukasz Fabianski, Arsenal's deputy shot stopper. The Polish keeper's fumble allowed Wigan to find an equalizer after being 2-0 down moments before.

But another player whose rare performances in an Arsenal shirt this season have been horrid is veteran Mikael Silvestre. The center half arrived from rivals Manchester United in the summer of last season and contributed solidly in his début season for the Gunners.

But the arrival of Thomas Vermaelen, the form of William Gallas, and the introduction of Sol Campbell in the January transfer window has seen the Frenchman receive very little playing time, and it shows.

It seems whenever the 32-year-old dons the red and white he makes a calamitous error allowing a goal. With Arsenal once again receiving a horror amount of injuries, especially near the back end of the campaign, the likes of Johan Djourou, William Gallas, Thomas Vermaelen, and Alexandre Song were all unavailable for crucial encounter forcing the ageing Silvestre to fill in and ultimately become hated by Arsenal fans.

The raises the question of a decision made by Arsene Wenger. During the January transfer window, Wenger opted to loan out the out-of-favor Philippe Senderos to Everton, re-sign 35-year-old Campbell, and keep Silvestre.

Since Senderos's loan spell to Italian giants AC Milan last season, the imposing Swiss has been unable to breakthrough into the Arsenal side. Prior to January, the 25-year-old had swallowed just two appearances, both in the League Cup. Obviously, a switch was needed but did Wenger need to think ahead.

Although Wenger may not fancy the former Servette defender, Senderos is still a quality defender. He brings height and power to the backline and would of served as a great deputy when the injuries came knocking to the Arsenal defenders.

Many fans would have preferred a fit Senderos in the center halves rather than a nervy Silvestre. So was loaning Philippe Senderos Wenger's worst mistake of the season?
