United Leave It Late; While Blues Stumble: The Prem Race Isnt Over Yet

Justin DowlingApr 18, 2010

With Paul Scholes last gasp effort against Manchester City on Saturday morning we were left not onlyย knowing that the gap between theย two teams within the Manchester city limits is bigger then people thought, but also that the title race is in full swing with much drama awaiting the final three weeks of the season.

As the dust settled at Eastlands United still needed help from Spurs and the White Hart Lane faithful to help them stay within one point of the current Premier Leagueย leader'sย Chelsea, in which they ultimately got with a gutsy performance put in by Tottenham and a brilliant performance from the young Welshman Gareth Bale who's turning in to a rising star. Spurs showed up unimpressed with Chelsea's recent form and brought the game to the league leaders for all 90 minutes and showed courage while willing themselves to a 2-1 victory, taking one step closer to Champions League football, and trying to secure their best finish in Premier League history thus far.

The Manchester Derby wasn't exactly "oneย to remember" unless your a United fan of course with City mainly sitting back most of the game and getting men behind the ball to help stunt United's attack, while really only looking to exploit weakness on the counter attack using there electric pace at the front with Bellamy, Adebayor, & Tevez. Chances were few and far between for most of the game with the best chances fallingย  United's waysย with Ryan Giggs who couldn't get enough behind his cheeky flick, and Wayne Rooney snatched at his effort that was just wide that many expected to hit the back of the net. Late in the second half City were almost certain to break the dead-lock with a goal front scramble that saw Edwin Van Der Sar barely get a touch on his punch and Vieira falling as he took his shot right in to the crowded chaos. Ultimately it took Vidic, Fletcher, and a half-hearted clearance from Gary Neville to get the ball out ย United's 18-yard box and get them clear from danger. Next the much maligned Dimitar Berbatov looked like he might get on the score sheet with a snap header that just barely missed goal and judging by Shay Given's body language and dive he was also unsure of where the ball might have ended up. Then a short while afterย in the 3rd minute of stoppage time Patrice Evra sent in his gently weighted cross in which Paul Scholes got on the end of and tucked it in the the side of the net to put the game beyond doubt in the 93rd minute.

This wasn't as pretty of a performance as United would of hoped for but ultimately in the end they got the job done and received the much needed 3 points to stay right behind Chelsea in what looks to be a climatic end to an already superb Premier League season. Chelsea will be without there controversial captain John Terry when they host Stoke next weekendย who saw red after receiving two yellow cards with the second coming in an extremely poor tackle on Gareth Bale late in the second half. With a trip to Anfield still on the horizon for the stunned Blues it makes me wonder if they couldn't capitalize on yesterday's game that would have surely sewn up the title, will they be able to finish this season as champions or will the Red Devils reclaim what's already theirs.
