Magnificent Wigan End Abysmal Arsenal's Title Dreams

Mohamed Eldin MasriApr 18, 2010

Over the course of the last two weeks, Arsenal have lost two games in a row, and today, Wigan athletic have made it three in a row, after displaying class, brilliance and miles upon miles of heart.

Arsenal were two goals up, and showed complete arrogance, thinking that the game has already been won, lacked attacking edge, lacked flair and completely lacked any fighting spirit.

Arsenal deserved the loss, and deserve to go this season without a trophy, but sadly, the fans do not deserve any of this.

The main culprits today were Wenger and none other than Fabianski, who desperately needs to leave the Emirates Stadium and to never play for a club like Arsenal again.

I have no hate for Fabianski at this moment, even though he is to blame for Wigan's comeback.

Arsenal scored through Walcott in the first half, and Silvestre early in the second, and did absolutely nothing worth mention afterwards.

Completely unworthy of being called champions at this moment, simply because they didn't try to kill the game off, a habit seen many times this season, most notably against West Ham and Birmingham.

And with only 10 minutes left in the game, everyone thought it was over in the Arsenal team, but the Wigan players had something else in mind, and the fans were able to see that quite well.

In only 11 minutes, Wigan thrashed Arsenal and scored three goals to make the best comeback in the history of the club, truly deserved, and the fans need to be congratulated for sticking with their team the way they did.  They deserved it too.

But again, the Arsenal fans are suffering because of one man's decisions.

Arsene Wenger.

Despite having the money, as Wenger himself affirmed, Wenger didn't buy any players.

Fans can understand that when you don't have money, you can't buy world class players, but Arsenal needed depth, and not the best players on the planet.

Wenger needs to put his childish ego aside, and look at what's best for Arsenal.

There is nothing wrong with buying a good Bolton defender, a good Wigan mid-fielder, and a good West Ham striker, and put them on the substitute's bench in case of emergencies like this.

In fact, when ever a key Arsenal player is injured, not only does Arsenal feel his absence, but they also feel the lack of presence from the player replacing him.

And what Wenger is really to be blamed for is his insistence and persistence on playing terrible goal keepers, who aren't just cut out to play at the top level of football.

Fabianski is probably having the worst time of his life, so let's not thrash the kid, but he isn't just cut out to represent Arsenal, and Almunia can only be considered as a second choice goalkeeper for Arsenal at best, his inconsistencies are hurting his amazing saves.

What Wenger is to be blamed for, is that not only did he not buy a goalkeeper in the summer, and not only did he not buy a goalkeeper in the January transfer window, but the fact that he choose to put Fabianski in both the Porto game, and today's game against Wigan.

Instead of fielding the Polish goalkeeper, Wenger should have played Mannone, especially when his talent is there for all to see.

Fabianski's error today confirmed that he should not have been in the game, while no one can exactly kill him for the first goal, but the poor positioning of the Arsenal defense, and the third goal, who the Arsenal defenders are all to blame, especially the fact that no one even tried to throw himself at the shot, Fabianski today has given Wigan the second goal.

The most important moment in the game, the turning point, a complete mayhem.

Fabianski couldn't even catch a ball that was coming his way, no one even touched him, and he couldn't even hold the ball.

Needless to say, Wigan's spirit was through the roof, and Fabianski's spirit, along with Arsenal's were completely dead.

Now, where Wenger is mainly to blame was his timing.

Fran Merida and Emmanuel Eboue were both coming on to play their parts, but Wigan scored right before the substitution was made.

Wenger should have put Van Persie, or even Eduardo in at that moment in time, and try to dominate the game once again, especially when you put into consideration that Arsenal are completely weak in defense, with the absence of both Vermaelen and Gallas.

Wigan then dominated the rest of the game, and Arsenal didn't make a single chance on goal.

Wenger shouldn't have taken Rosicky off, who was more active than Diaby, and Arsenal are now trophy-less for the fifth season in a row.

To be honest, Arsenal's chances were dead ever since the Tottenham game, but the lack of fighting spirit, and the lack of heart is what the fans are disgusted by the most.

Arsene Wenger needs to plan for the next season from this moment.

Plan on how to keep Fabregas, plan on how to keep Gallas, or even buy a new younger defender to replace him, and most importantly, have more depth.

Wenger once said in an interview;

"When you have a squad of 20 quality players, you can't complain about injuries."

I completely agree with the Frenchman, but where exactly are Arsenal's quality players?

Not even the entirety of Arsenal's starting 11 are pure quality.

The likes of Almunia and Denilson can be easily replaced for better players, and that's not to say that they should go, but that they should be on the bench.

Wenger even went to loan out Wilshere, and with the injuries Arsenal currently have, one would start to wonder if Wenger made the right choice, and in the process, killing of Wilshere's chance in being a "One club man", something that Arsenal have lacked greatly, and the other top teams have at the moment.

Wenger needs to buy not one or two players like he stated, but rather seven or eight players.

Some players are to be just bought for cover, in case of injuries, what's remarkable, is that Man U and Chelsea have them by the truckload, but not Arsenal, who are known to be the most injury-prone team in all of Europe's elite.

Arsenal's lack of depth was there for all to see, when Wenger fielded three injured players against Barcelona in the first leg at the Emirates Stadium, and the end result was all three getting injured for the rest of the season.

Take Lampard, Drogba and Terry from Chelsea, and see where they are know.

Take Rooney from Man U, and Take Messi and Xavi from Barcelona, and see what the team will do.

Indeed, they will have achieved much less with the other players, but they were never forced to play them through injury, mainly because they have depth in their ranks.

Wenger needs to address these issues, if success is to come to the club in the next season.

Wenger can also be blamed for not playing key players in the FA Cup games, and after getting eliminated from Stoke, and even though Wenger knew that Man U and Liverpool were eliminated, he took the risk, and now Chelsea are the favorites to retain the FA Cup.

While Wenger is definitely not expected to change his ways, or his way of thinking, especially at his age.

But he can admit that he got things wrong.

A good goalkeeper is said to save his team a 12 points loss, this season, Arsenal's goal keepers have not only failed to save Arsenal 12 points, but also cost them loss of points as well.

Wenger needs to be firm and fair, Fabianski can't exactly complain, he had his chances, even though Mannone deserved his more.

Wenger needs to let some players out, and many good players in, for that is the only way Arsenal can keep up in the title race once things get hectic at the end of the season.

Like always, the Arsenal fans will be looking for next season, and hope Wenger puts his fans ahead of his ego, at least for their sake.

Wigan must be congratulated and respected for their performance today, they deserved to stay in the EPL for the next season, and they have taught the Arsenal players something they need to learn, if they are to be champions soon.

Fortune favors the bold.
