2010 SMCAA TOURNAMENT: NORTH REGION – SECOND ROUND
#3 Georgetown 70, #35 Holy Cross 46
Georgetown blew open a close game at the half and rolled to a 70-46 thrashing of Holy Cross in a SMCAA North 2nd round game. The Hoyas, who shot 53% on the night, led by just six at halftime and shut down the Crusaders in the second half, holding them to 18 points. Jason Clark led the way for Georgetown with 19 points, which included 3 three pointers. Julian Vaughn added 13 points in the contest on 7 of 10 shooting while Austin Freeman chipped in 12 points in the win.
Holy Cross was led by Andrew Keister and his 13 points and 13 rebounds while R.J. Evans had 12 points, but only shot 6 for 18 in the contest. That summed up the Crusaders’ night, hitting just 17 of 52 (33%) from the field.
#14 Northern Colorado 61, #19 St. Bonaventure 55
Northern Colorado got away with some dodgy foul shooting at the end of the game to come away with a 61-55 win over St. Bonaventure in a North 2nd match-up. The Bears ended up hitting 70% of their attempts at the line in the game, but were just 4 for 8 in the last 2:30. The Bonnies helped them out, however, by making just one shot in the last four minutes of the game. Northern Colorado was led by Will Figures and his 16 points on the night. Devon Beitzel added 13 points in the win, all of them coming from behind the 3 point arc or the free throw line.
St. Bonaventure was led Chris Matthews’ 13 points and he had the Bonnies only 3 three pointers in the game. Andrew Nicholson added 12 points while Michael Davenport chipped in 10 points in the loss.
NORTH REGION 3RD ROUND: #14 Northern Colorado vs. #3 Georgetown
#11 Northwestern 60, #22 St. Peter’s 51
Northwestern shut down St. Peter’s in the first half, holding them to 16 points, and went on to a comfortable 60-51 win over the Peacocks in a North 2nd round contest. The Wildcats held their opponents to just 34% shooting on the night and just 3 of 14 from the three point line. Michael Thompson and John Shurna each had 15 points to lead the way for Northwestern. Shurna added 7 rebounds in the win.
St. Peter’s did get 13 points and 10 rebounds from Wesley Jenkins and 10 points and 5 rebounds from Ryan Bacon in the loss.
#6 Louisville 71, #27 Ball State 57
Louisville used a key 23-4 second half run to turn a five point deficit into a 14 point lead and pull away from Ball State 71-57 in a 2nd round North contest. The Cardinals’ run came with them trailing 47-42 with 15:30 remaining after Ball State had turned their own 5 point deficit into a five point lead with a 16-6 run to open the second half. Edgar Sosa led the way for Louisiville with 17 points and 6 assists, including 3 of Louisville’s 6 three pointers in the game. Samardo Samuels added 15 points in the win.
Ball State got 12 points apiece from Randy Davis and Jarrod Jones, but ended up being out rebounded 39-25 on the night.
