Chris Iannetta's Walk-Off Hands Mets Another Series Loss

Sammy MakkiApr 14, 2010
DENVER-- For the first time since 1992, the New York Mets have started a season 2-6. It's the club's worst start in 18 years.
With players like Jose Reyes, David Wright, Jason Bay, Johan Santana, and Francisco Rodriguez, that should not be the case.
But it happened in Wednesday night's walk-off loss to the Colorado Rockies as Mets 20-year-old relief pitcher Jenrry Mejia saw his pitch sail over the left field fence, off the bat of Chris Iannetta.

One thing that did happen that is an achievement in it's own right? The Mets actually fought back to tie the ballgame scoring runs in the eighth and ninth to the send the game into extra innings.
Bright spots were Jeff Francoeur and David Wright hitting long balls, handing the Mets 1-0 and 3-1 leads.
Those leads were not safe for long as Mets starter Jon Niese allowed three runs in the third, powered by a three-run home run by Rockies right fielder Ryan Spilborghs.
Trailing 5-3 in the eighth, the Mets cut the lead to 5-4 with an RBI single by Rod Barajas.
They would tie the game in the ninth as Luis Castillo hit a sac fly, scoring Gary Matthews who came into the game as part of double-switch earlier in the game.
Jon Niese did not have a solid outing as he went five, allowing five runs on nine hits. He walked two and hit two batters in the process.
Meanhwhile the Mets got to Rockies starter Aaron Cook for two home runs and that's all.
In the bottom of the 10th, Chris Iannetta crushed Jenrry Mejia's second pitch into left field for the walk-off home run. The Rockies won the game 6-5.
With that, the Mets are in danger of starting a season 2-7 for the first time since 1974.
