2010 SMCAA TOURNAMENT – NORTHEAST REGION – FIRST ROUND
#23 Valparaiso 73, #42 Texas-Pan American 51
Valparaiso had four players score in double figures as they coasted to a 73-51 SMCAA Northeast 1st round win. Cory Johnson and Brandon Wood each had 14 for the Crusaders as they also got 12 from Brandon McPherson and 11 from Howard Little off the bench. Valpo shot 54% from the field on the night.
The Broncs were led by Julius Hearn and his 11 points, but UTPA could manage just 40% from the field and they were under 50% from the free throw line.
NORTHEAST REGION 2ND ROUND: #23 Valparaiso vs. #10 Saint Louis
#22 Denver 71, #43 Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 51
Denver got balanced scoring as the Pioneers had five players score in double figures to win comfortably, 71-51, over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in a 1st round Northeast game. Brian Stafford led the way with 14 points as Chase Hallam added 13 for DU. Nate Rohnert, Andrew Hooper and Rob Lewis all chipped 11 points apiece.
The Cougars were led by Aamir McCleary with 11 points, but SIUE could only 31% from the field in the loss.
NORTHEAST REGION 2ND ROUND: #22 Denver vs. #11 Wright State
#24 San Jose State 87, #41 Toledo 82
San Jose State put together a key 11-0 run in the second half to clinch the game and defeat Toledo, 87-82 in a Northeast 1st round contest. The Spartans were led by 21 points from Mac Peterson and 17 from C.J. Webster. Adrian Oliver and Robert Owens added 12 apiece for SJSU.
The Rockets, who had gotten as close as 56-54, were led Jake Barnett’s 19 points. Justin Anyijong and Stephen Albrecht chipped in 14 apiece, but despite shooting 54% for the game, Toledo could not get over the hump.
NORTHEAST REGION 2ND ROUND: #24 San Jose State vs. #9 North Carolina State
#32 Hampton 59, #33 Texas Southern 53
Vincent Simpson had 23 points as Hampton overcame 37% shooting to defeat Texas Southern 59-53 in a SMCAA Northeast 1st round game. Charles Funches added 10 points and 8 rebounds in the win for the Pirates.
The Tigers, led by DeAndre Hall’s 15 points and Travele Jones’s 14 points and 10 rebounds, only trailed by one at halftime, but were unable to secure the victory.
NORTHEAST REGION 2ND ROUND: #32 Hampton vs. #1 Syracuse
#36 Charleston Southern 51, #29 Louisiana-Lafayette 49
Kelvin Martin scored 13 points and added 11 rebounds to lead Charleston Southern to a hard fought 51-49 win over Louisiana-Lafayette in a 1st round Northeast matchup. Jamarco Warren and Jeremy Sexton each added 10 points in the win, despite the Buccaneers only being able to shoot 35% from the field for the game.
The Ragin’ Cajuns got 20 points from Chris Gradnigo and 10 points and 7 rebounds from Tyren Johnson, but were done in by shooting only 44% from the free throw line (8-18).
NORTHEAST REGION 2ND ROUND: #36 Charleston Southern vs. #4 Missouri
#34 Tennessee State 72, #31 East Carolina 70
Jacquan Nobles hit a 3 pointer with 1:11 remaining to give Tennessee State a come from behind 72-70 win over East Carolina in a Northeast 1st round thriller. The Tigers, who trailed by 5 at halftime, and by as many as 10 in the second half, had 5 players in double figures led by Josh Sain with 16 points. Wil Peters (12), Robert Covington (11), Jeremiah Crutcher (11), and Darius Cox (10) also contributed in the win.
The Pirates were led by Brock Young’s 18 points, while Jontae Sherrod added 13 and Jamar Abrams (12) and Darrius Morrow also scored in double figures for ECU.
NORTHEAST REGION 2ND ROUND: #34 Tennessee State vs. #2 Michigan State
#30 California-Riverside 73, #35 Rice 64
California-Riverside shot 58% from 3 point range to defeat Rice 73-64 in a 1st round Northeast contest. The Highlanders, who were 11 for 19 beyond the arc, were led by Kyle Austin and his 16 points. Rudy Meo (12 points, 4-5 from 3 point range) and Lateef McMullan (10 points, 3-3 from 3 point range) were in double figures off the bench for UCR.
The Owls were led by Arsalan Kazemi and Lawrence Ghoram, who each had 12 points in the game. Connor Frizzelle was also in double figures with 10 points.
