Mets-Rockies: John Maine Pummeled in New York Loss

Sammy MakkiApr 13, 2010

DENVER—The Mets really needed to get off to a fast start on this road trip.

They had the advantage, or so you'd think, of facing a pitcher that hadn't pitched in the big leagues since 2008.

Once again, though, their pitching let them down. The Mets' record fell to 2-5 because in the third inning John Maine blew up, allowing six runs in the inning, highlighted by a costly error by Maine himself.

Already down 3-0 with a couple of runners on, Rockies second baseman Clint Barmes hit a comebacker to the mound. Maine lost his footing and fired the ball to first, and it got away from Fernando Tatis down the line. Both runners scored to make it 5-0.

Following that, Rockies starter Greg Smith hit an RBI double. Next up was Seth Smith, who completely blew the game open with a two-run shot, extending the lead to 8-0.

The Mets offense looked completely baffled by Greg Smith, who went seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out eight.

The only bright spot for the Mets offense was David Wright. He went 2-for-2 with two walks, including a home run in the sixth inning after Luis Castillo got thrown out at second on a questionable call and decision trying to extend a hit into a double.

The Mets' flawless bullpen finally cracked, as the previously perfect Fernando Nieve allowed three runs in the seventh inning, allowing the Rockies to extend their lead to 11-2.

The Mets have now put themselves in a position where they must win the next two games to avoid losing their third straight series to start the season.
