2010 SMCAA TOURNAMENT – WEST REGION – FIRST ROUND
#32 Towson 67, #33 High Point 53
Towson had 4 players score in double figures as it won a SMCAA West 1st round game, 67-53 over High Point. Jarrel Smith led the Tigers with 13 points and had help from Calvin Lee (12 points), Josh Thornton (10 Points), and Isaiah Philmore (10 points).
The Panthers were led by Nick Barbour (12 points) and Jourdan Morris (10 points), but could not overcome a 36-25 halftime deficit.
WEST REGION 2ND ROUND: #32 Towson vs. #1 Butler
#34 Long Island 81, #31 Tulane 78 (OVERTIME)
Aaron Holmes hit a jumper with 22 seconds left to force overtime, but Tulane could not carry the momentum into the extra session as Long Island beat the Green Wave 81-78 in a 1st round West contest. David Hicks scored 5 of his team leading 21 points (along with 13 rebounds) in OT to lead the Blackbirds to the victory. Jaytornah Wisseh added 17 points, Kyle Johnson had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Jamal Olasewere had 12 points for LIU.
Tulane was led by David Booker’s 14 points as well as 13 from Kendall Timmons and 12 from Kris Richard.
WEST REGION 2ND ROUND: #34 Long Island vs. #2 Purdue
#35 Norfolk State 78, #30 Texas-Arlington 52
Norfolk State had 4 players in double figures and shot 54% from the field in a 78-52 West 1st round blowout over Texas-Arlington. The Spartans were led by 18 points and 10 rebounds from Christian Morris and also got contributions from Michael Deloach (17 points), Rob Hampton (14 points), and Aleek Pauline (12 points). NSU also out rebounded UTA by 22 in the game and led 41-29 at the half.
The Mavericks, who were led by Marquez Haynes’s 17 points, shot a dismal 28% for the game.
WEST REGION 2ND ROUND: #35 Norfolk State vs. #3 New Mexico
#36 Jacksonville State 62, #29 Wyoming 53
Jacksonville State used a key 18-9 run over the last 8 minutes of the game to rally for a 62-53 1st round West win. Trenton Marshall had 8 of his game high 15 points (along with 12 rebounds) in the comeback as the Gamecocks broke open a 44-44 tie in the second half. JSU, which trailed 33-27 at the half, also got 11 points from Jay-R Strowbridge and 10 points off the bench from Amadou Mbodji.
The Cowboys were led by Adam Waddell’s 11 points and 8 rebounds, but only 50% from the free throw line (10-20).
