2010 SMCAA TOURNAMENT – SOUTH REGION: FIRST ROUND

         #24 Maine 59, #41 Southern Utah 56

        Maine held off a furious rally from Southern Utah to escape their 1st Round South game with a 59-56 win.  The Black Bears led by 15 with 7:00 to go, but the Thunderbirds kept fighting back.  SUU was trailing 59-56 with 14 seconds left after a Junior Bernal (12 pts) FT.  The Thunderbirds missed two 3-point attempts, one by Davis Baker (who led Southern Utah with 15 points) and Matt Hodgson (6 points) in the final six seconds to fall just short.
        Besides Bernal’s 12 points for Maine, Gerald McLemore (12 points) and Sean McNally (10 Points) also scored in double figures for the Black Bears.

        SOUTH REGION 2ND ROUND: #24 Maine vs. #9 South Florida

        #22 Southern Methodist 92, #43 New Jersey Tech 61

        SMU shot nearly 60% from the field and had five players in double figures as they rolled over New Jersey Tech 92-61 in a South 1st Round blowout.  The Mustangs, who led 50-32 at the half, out rebounded the Highlanders by 25 as NJIT had no answer on the glass.  Mouhammad Faye led the way for SMU with 17 points and 8 rebounds.  Robert Nyakundi (15 points), Papa Dia (14 points, 13 rebounds), Derek Williams (14 points, 7 assists), and Paul McCoy (14 points) all scored in double figures for the Mustangs.
        Isaiah Wilkerson led New Jersey Tech with 17 points and Chris Flores who had 16 points.

        SOUTH REGION 2ND ROUND: #22 Southern Methodist vs. #11 Iowa State

        #23 Fresno State 83, #42 Howard 44

        Fresno State got 24 points and 13 rebounds from Greg Smith and 22 points from Sylvester Seay in leading the Bulldogs to an easy 83-44 win over Howard.  Mychal Ladd added 15 and Paul George chipped in 12 for FSU as the Bulldogs shot 54% on the night.
        Calvin Thompson led Howard with 12 points, but the Bison ended up only shooting 30% on the night.
