The Greatest Athletes of All-Time

Thomas BrownJul 14, 2008

I thought I would take a look at some of the freakiest athletes that have ever played sports. In order to make the cut, you can't play weird sports like tennis or golf, you just have to be athletic.

I don't care if you are terrible at your sport or that you don't have great numbers, I just care if you are athletic. Let's be honest, baseball players are not athletic. Let's be honest, I don't care how athletic Tiger Woods is, until he steps onto a football field or basketball court, he is not athletic. Let's also be honest: the best athletes in each sport are not the ones that always put up the best numbers.

This list is purely subjective, I don't care about what stats these players had or what they accomplished in the game. All I care about is their athleticism. And I list their stats just because I think its fun.

Now let's reveal the list.

10. Neon Deion Sanders

Deon Sanders was so fast that he would run a 4.21 and complain about the track being slow. He was flashy, and flashiness gets you on this list.

9. Barry Sanders
Barry ran backwards 10 yards, somehow got out of impossible positions then busted an 80 yard run out of the blue. Unbelievable shiftiness, incredible agility. Averaged NFL-record 5.4 yard per carry for his career. Some of his runs just leave you with your mouth wide open.

8. Lance Armstrong

I'm not putting up a video of Lance Armstrong riding a bike because that's just dumb. But anyone who can overcome cancer, dope themself up with blood cells and win 7 straight Tour de France's makes it on my list anyday.

7. Jim Brown

Jim's the man.

6. Walter Payton

Walter is the man, just look at his highlight tape. Many consider him to be the best running back to ever play in the NFL.

5. Jim Thorpe

This guy is so old that I can't even find a YouTube video of his highlights. Nevertheless, he was an Olympian, NFL player, and a great man.

4. Wayne Gretsky

As much as I hate to put a hockey player on this list, this guy is simply amazing. You have to rewind some of his goals and just ask yourself, "How did he do that?" He kind of changes my mind about hockey players being athletes.

3. Michael Jordan

His Airness. Enough said.

2. Michael Johnson

Anyone who can run the 200 meter dash in 19.32 seconds deserves a mention. I don't care how much drugs he was on, if you want to make the list that badly then go ahead and kill yourself. He makes the world's best runners look like they are JV offensive linemen doing conditioning after practice.

1. Bo Jackson

Jackson is the best athlete to ever live hands down. Let's keep in mind that we don't care about his short career because we are talking about pure athletes here. Bo hit 141 home runs in under 700 games and if he would have stayed healthy that would have put him in the 500 home run club. He averaged 6.8 yards per carry his rookie season in the NFL. He trucked people like a runaway freight train then ran over them without looking back as if he were Marshawn Lynch.

Remember I didn't do this based on stats, just on how GOOD they are. I define GOOD by being athletic, so if you don't like it too bad.
