Mets Drop Series Finale to Marlins 3-1

Flushing Baseball DailyApr 8, 2010

In front of a crowd of just 25,982, the smallest in Citi Field history, the Mets dropped the series finally to the Florida Marlins 3-1. Jonathon Niese pitched well enough, but the offense was a no-show as they have fallen below .500.

Notes

  • Jon Niese got a quality start. His line: 6IP, 3ER, 2BB, 3K.
  • The bullpen combined for: 3IP, 1H, 0ER, 2BB, 0K.
  • In the two loses the Mets were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
  • Ruben Tejada, who had his first career start, went 0-for-2 and ended a two-out-rally in the second inning.
  • David Wright and Jason Bay combined to go 1-for-8. Only Angel Pagan and Jeff Francoeur had two hits. Francoeur had the only extra-base hit, a double.
  • Jose Reyes played nine innings for Single-A St. Lucie and went 0-for-4 with an RBI. He’s expected to start for the Mets Saturday.

Thoughts

  • It’s definitely too early to get upset about dropping one series.
  • The Mets are now below .500 so they should be focused on at least staying at that level until Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes are back in the lineup.
  • Speaking of which, it is great news to hear that Reyes is returning on Saturday, even if he’s not 100 percent he will make an immediately impact.

Line of the night

  • The entire Mets lineup: 0BB – Niese and the bullpen did a great job keeping the Mets in the game, but they couldn’t pick it up offensively. It’s hard to score if you are not getting baserunners. The Mets need to be more patient to win ball games.

Up next

  • The Mets have a three game series against the Washington Nationals.
  • Mets expected starters:
    • Fri, April 9: RHP Mike Pelfrey (0-0,  no ERA) vs. RHP Garrett Mock (0-0, no ERA)
    • Sat, April 10: LHP Oliver Perez (0-0, no ERA) vs. LHP John Lannan (0-1, 12.27 ERA)
    • Sun, April 11: to be announced
