A Great Draft Strategy For The Packers.

Avery BundgaardApr 8, 2010

Even though the Packers already have a good team, I believe that they can be great.  They can be a Super Bowl ready team with the right draft picks.  There are just a few needs that the Packers have.  Those basic needs are OLB, DB, and OT.  If the Packers play their cards right they will have a very successful draft.

I think the Packers biggest need is at OLB.  The Packers should take one of three OLB if they were available at their pick.  They are, in order, Rolando McClain, Brandon Graham, and Sergio Kindle.  McClain will probably be off the board, but the other two have a shot of landing with the packers.  I would take any one of these guys before I focus on any other position.

If those three OLB were gone by the time the Packers picked, I would advise them to take an elite DB.  Charles Woodson and Al Harris, who is coming off of a knee injury, are getting old and need some credible backups.  Eric Berry, Earl Thomas, and Joe Haden will probably be off the board, but the Pack should also look at Devin McCourty, Patrick Robinson, or Taylor Mays.  All of these guys have great skills and would help the Packers who aren't very deep at DB.

There are a lot of options at OT.  This is a big need for the Packers, but with the re-signing of Clifton and Tauscher, OT could be the last resort for the Packers in the first round.

If those elite OLB and DB are off the board, the Packers should select an OT.  There are plenty to choose from.  Russell Okung, Trent Williams, Bryan Bulaga, and maybe Bruce Campbell will be off the board at that time.  The players the Packers should be looking at are Anthony Davis and Charles Brown.

The Packers probably won't have to worry about OT in the first round.  They will probably draft an OLB or DB I mentioned above.  There will be plenty of OT left in the second or third rounds.  Jared Veldheer would be an excellent pick in the second round for the Packers.

The Packers could be a couple picks away from the Super Bowl.  If they have a well thought out strategy, then this draft would be very successful.  I believe that this is a great strategy.  I just hope that Ted Thompson thinks that same way.
