Falcons Team Building Formula Works If...

Frank SpartiApr 7, 2010

O.K. the Formula sounds simple and fundamentally sound. Build your team from the Inside Out. So Far So Good with a quarterback and middle linebacker in 2008 and a nose tackle in 2009. These picks are all great and will benefit the team for years to come.

Add a few late round draft picks that look like diamonds in the rough. Then go out and spend some money in free agency, being very strategic of course. Now the Falcons are light years away from where they were in 2007. The team just needs to put the last pieces of the puzzle together and maybe they can make it all the way to the Jerry Jones Stadium in February 2011. What, they don't call it that yet?

One minor problem stands in the way. The Falcons Brass needs to correctly evaluate their needs by prioritizing. This requires evaluating players correctly and remembering to adhere to the inside out philosophy.

Lets consider the many Mock Drafts out there today. You would think that the Falcons have decided that acquiring Dunta Robinson allows them to focus on the Linebacker position. I hope not because in my opinion there are two areas of need that have greater priority.

I will start with the second most need first. Defensive Back! You have got to have more coverage for the Defensive ends to get sacks. John Abraham was a finger tip away several times last year. Better DB's means more sacks not vice versa.

The number One Need really is the Offensive Line. The holes just weren't there in 2009 like they were in 2008. The Best Place to Fix this problem is, all together now, from the inside out. Do I really think the Falcons will take a center in round one? No, but I would not hesitate. The offense would be stonger in every way with a blue chip center.

Picking an early Linebacker, Defensive End or Wide Receiver goes against the winning philosophy. I hope the Falcons can keep this in mind.
