Chavo Guerrero: The Most Misused Talent in WWE Today

The Doctor Chris MuellerApr 7, 2010

When some people hear the name Chavo Guerrero, they think Eddie's nephew, or even WWE jobber.  Personaly, when I hear the name Chavo Guerrero, I think greatness.

Chavo Guerrero is a member of the legendary Guerrero family of wrestling.  He is currently employed by the WWE, but you wouldn't know it as he has received so little TV time lately.

Chavo began his career on TV in the US in WCW.  He came into their blossoming cruiserweight division and feuded with his uncle Eddie, Rey Mysterio, and the rest of the amazing talent in the division.

For the five years he spent in WCW he was a cruiserweight champion twice and a tag team champion once.  Chavo was a member of the comedy stable "Misfits in Action," being dubbed "Lieutenant Loco."

Chavo was used poorly at some points in his WCW career, like when he was obssesed with a little hobby horse.  This, however, did not stop Chavo from excelling and eventually becoming a champion.

When WWE bought WCW, Chavo's contract was one of only 25 bought up by WWE and he debuted as part of the "Alliance' before being moved off TV to be a trainer on WWE's Tough Enough reality series.

Upon returning to the active roster he was teamed with his uncle Eddie and the two formed Los Guerreros, a successful tag team who, despite being faces, used cheating tactics to win.

Eddie and Chavo went on to become two-time WWE tag team champions while facing the likes of Edge and Mysterio and Team Angle.

Chavo grew jealous of his uncle's singles-title ambitions and eventually turned on him.  The two faced off at the Royal Rumble with Eddie coming out the winner.

Chavo was again a villian, and he adopted a gimmick of a white Anglo-American named Kerwin White.  He dyed his hair blonde and rode a golf cart to the ring.  His catchphrase "If it's not white, it's not right" became controversial because of its racist overtones and was soon dropped.

During this gimmick he gained another cruiserweight title and began feuding with Shelton Benjamin over certain comments made about black superstars.

During this time, Chavo's uncle Eddie passed away and Chavo dropped the Kerwin White gimmick and began wrestling as a face in honor of Eddie.

Chavo gained a victory over JBL soon after, helping Chavo rise in the WWE ranks.  Chavo also had a short feud with Randy Orton after Orton disparaged Eddie's legacy.  Chavo used the "3 Amigos" and "Frog Splash" in honor of Eddie after this time.

Chavo was also supporting longtime friend Rey Mysterio during Rey's title reign as world champion.  Chavo, however, ended up costing Rey the title in a match with King Booker, turning him heel once again.

Chavo began pusuing the cruiserweight title again, and gained it back to become a four-time cruiserweight champion in the WWE.

Chavo was eventually drafted to ECW where he went on to have an amazing feud with CM Punk that culminated in Guerrero becoming ECW champion.  During this time, Chavo was teamed up with Edge and his Aunt Vickie to form the stable "La Familia."

The Stable also had newcomers Zach Ryder and Curt Hawkins.  Together the world and ECW champions reigned over ECW and Smackdown, cheating their way to many victories.

The La Familia stable eventually broke up and Chavo was left on his own.  Drafted to Raw, Chavo found himself without a direction or feud.

Eventually the creative team in WWE paired Chavo with his aunt the two feuded with Santino Marella in what ended in a hog pen match, which the Guerreros lost.  Soon after, Chavo was paired with Hornswoggle, with the little guy gaining many victories over Chavo in the process.

Chavo teased a face turn when he saved Hornswoggle from the "Masterlock," but the angle was dropped and he remained a heel.

Now Chavo is rarely seen on TV, and that, to me, is sad.  Chavo is one of WWE's most gifted technical wrestlers today, and his ability to have a five-star match is better than most in the main event scene.

Given the chance, Chavo could have a good run with either the US or IC titles, but the WWE seems to have lost faith in him, and I can't figure out why.  Chavo has gone with every horrible gimmick thrown his way and made them work.

If Chavo is ever gone from WWE, I think he could have a great career in TNA.  He has family in TNA doing the Spanish broadcasting, and his style would fit right in with the current X-Division stars.

I hope Chavo finds something that works for him soon because he is truly a great wrestler.
