Fans of the Weekend: Spartan Fan

When you take a trip to an event as significant as the Final Four, a concept such as the “Fan of the Week” just doesn’t seem to do it justice.  There were simply too many characters to single out one.  And sure the season is over, Duke has been crowned national champion, and it’s time to move on to baseball, but that doesn’t mean it’s still not enjoyable to poke fun at some of the specimens we witnessed on the streets of Indianapolis. 

Make no mistake, each of the four teams sent their fare share of photo-worthy supporters.  But make no mistake, no school was as well represented as the Michigan State Spartans.

Despite being bounced from the tourney by the hometown Butler Bulldogs on Saturday, MSU supporters stole the show when it came to mockable fans.  Not only did we hear chants like “Lick my Butler” when walking past an informal pre-game fan gathering at a sports bar, but they also brought the heat with numerous FOTW quality entries:

MSU Fan #1 – It was at a game in 1990 when he saw that beautiful sweater hanging in one of the memorabilia stores and just had to have it. 20 years later is still fits…almost. 

MSU Fan #2 – Rule #325 in the blogging handbook: When uber-nerds walk by dressed like they are re-enacting scenes from 300, it’s mandatory that you jump in the photo with them.  When they both throw basketball related gang signs at the camera, it just makes it that much better.

MSU Fan #3 – Look closely and you’ll see that Izzo signed the jersey, but for some reason he refused to sign the lime green headband.  Elitist.   

MSU Fan #4 – Trust us, this the last time that guy accepts a bet with his meatheaded son that if the Spartans make the Final Four, he’ll paint his face like a green and white checkerboard. Consider it a lesson learned.

MSU Fan #5 – Odds that this guy’s jersey blew open like a overstressed rubber band during the game – 3:1

MSU Fan #6 – After riding all the way from East Lansing, you should have seen how pissed this guy was when Event Staff told him he wasn’t going to be able to bring his bike into the game. 

MSU Fan #7 – One word.  Zubaz.

Way to bring the heat Spartan fans.
