Is The UFC Using James Toney? Boxing Guru Freddie Roach Thinks So

Tim NgoApr 3, 2010

Legendary trainer Freddie Roach believes former boxing champion James Toney is merely a pawn in the UFC’s game of chess.

This is what the boxing guru recently had to say about Toney’s UFC signing:

"

“They’re just using him. They’re going to say their sport’s better than ours. Usually, if they fight an MMA fight, they’re going to win, and if they fight a boxing fight, we’re going to win. They’re two totally different sports. It’s something a 40-year-old guy just can’t learn, and in James’ case, it’ll be hard to learn.”

Roach is best known for his work with boxer Manny Pacquiao, but has also coached several MMA fighters such as Andrei Arlovski, Anderson Silva and Dan Hardy.

UFC president Dana White recently stated he was unsure why he signed Toney and admitted that he has no clue what lies ahead for the 41-year-old.

“To be honest, I don’t know why I did it,” White said at a pre-UFC 111 press conference. “But we did it. I did this deal, and now I have to figure out what to do with him.”

MMA fighters like Randy Couture and Roy “Big Country” Nelson have offered their services to welcome Toney into the violent sport of MMA, but things have been quiet on the Toney front since his official signing last month.
