You Will Never Forget the Name of Goldust

John BetschelMar 31, 2010

You have known him by many things, but none have been as unforgettable as Goldust, the only other person I know to have more gimmicks than Mick Foley.

Simply known as "The Bizarre One," Goldust re-debuted in the WWE in September of 1995.

He would win his very first match at an In Your House PPV against Marty Jannetty and then go on to feud with Razor Ramon.

Goldust would continue on the win the Intercontinental belt from Ramon at the 1996 Royal Rumble due to interference from the 1-2-3 Kid. A time that also marked the debut of the lovely Marlena (his then-legitimate wife,) a cigar-smoking beauty, who would sit in a director's chair and advise him.

A rematch was supposed to take place at Wrestlemania XII, but didn't happen because Ramon was suspended.

Instead, Goldust would face Roddy Piper in a non-title, "Hollywood Backlot Brawl," and lose.

He defended his championship against the likes of Savio Vega and The Ultimate Warrior, before losing it to Ahmed Johnson at the 1996 King Of The Ring.

Goldust then gained the services of Mankind and feuded with The Undertaker.

He would then proceed to feud with Brian Pillman, ofย whom he lost the services of Terry (aka Marlena) for 30 days.

Just before the 30 days were up, Pillman had died of heart disease just hours before the Badd Blood PPV.

Throughout 1999, vignettes featuring footage of wrestlers began airing on television simply known as "GTV."

This angle was eventually dropped with no explanation of where they were coming from or who was making them.

It was originally to be known as "GDTV" (Goldust Television) with the intention of eventually revealing Goldust as the person behind them, but were renamed GTV after he requested and was granted a release from his contract.

Goldust has since left and come back to the WWE on several different occasions, even trying to join the NWO.

He was thrown into an electrical box and electrocuted by two members of the then stable Evolution, Orton and Batista (kayfabe).

He developed a 'stutter', which still continues to this day.

Now Goldust is a multiple-time IC champ, a former Tag Team champ, and even a nine-time Hardcore champion.

All of this is pretty impressive, but it's the vignettes that he would cut or his in ring tactics that set him apart from everyone else.

That and his look.

Goldust's mic skills and the way he would get into that gimmick, as if this were how he was in real life, were outstanding.

I also feel his entrance is among one of the best in the WWE.

In the ring, he would get in his opponents heads with his lavish personality.

Instead of a clothesline he would use the butt thump.

He also invented possibly one of the most painful wrestling finishers the, "Shattered Dreams."

He would have his opponent in the corner, put each leg up across the second rope, then get a running start before punting them right in the "yam bag." (Ifย I may steal a line from Tazz.)

His trademark throat chop, which is used as a counter to the bag body drop, was recently used by his real-life brother Cody Rhodes.

Unfortunately, now Goldust has hardly been seen at all, besides having a short feud with Sheamus when he was on ECW.

Goldust recently had a match with former World Champ Chris Jericho on Superstars, and on Jerichoโ€™s Twitter page he said he really dug the match with Goldust, that he is in the best shape of his life, and as good as anyone else in the WWE.

Coming from someone like Chris Jericho, that should tell you something. Goldust is underrated.

Hopefully, Goldust will get the push he deserves, and maybe become IC champ again, or at least get a title shot, even if he doesn't win.

But until then, if you're anything like me you will never ever forget the name of (phwooooooooo) GOLDUST!
