Why the USC Trojans Will Win the 2011 BCS National Championship

Kyle WarnerMar 29, 2010

"You guys signed here to win championships, and that's why we came here too. We're here to win championships every single year."

Those were the words of Lane Kiffin during his first team meeting as head coach of the USC Trojans.

The USC Trojan football program has seemed to be nothing more than a pipeline to the NFL. But with the addition of quality college coaches, the Trojans seem to have switched their focus from the NFL to the BCS.

The days of recruiting guys solely to put them into the NFL are over. Lane Kiffin and staff have returned the college football mindset to the Trojans. Enough of boasting about first-round draft choices; it's time we boast about Heisman trophies and national championships.

The Trojans are confident, which is evident in the way they speak of their new coaches.

"(Lane Kiffin) is a great coach. He's a guy with a lot of confidence and we need that. The staff that Coach Kiffin brought with him is a disciplined-oriented staff, and that's what we needed" -Running back Marc Tyler.

Last year's Trojans team seemed to always play to not lose. The attacking, menacing, ruthless defenses we were used to seeing played defeated and weak. "Defeated" and "weak" are two words that aren't in coach Ed Orgeron's vocabulary, unless he's screaming it at a lazy defensive lineman.

This year's USC Trojans will be disciplined, hard-nosed, and have a refuse-to-lose mentality. There will be a zero tolerance for laziness from the coaches, and that's what this football team needs.

The stars are aligned for a Trojan run at a national title. You can bet that Lane Kiffin and staff are setting the bar high for this season. The Trojans have the talent level and the coaching staff to evolve into one of the top teams in the nation and into a national championship contender.

"I tell them, ‘You guys need to pancake them. I’ll bring the butter and syrup.’”  -Running back Allen Bradford.

Lane Kiffin ran that ball last season at Tennessee a lot, and look for that to continue as it is Allen Bradford's turn to show Trojan fans what he can do. And, folks, look for that to be a whole lot.

If you check out USC wide receiver Ronald Johnson's twitter page, he has been talking about winning the Heisman trophy, which, although unlikely, is a nice thing to see. The confidence that Johnson possesses has come from the work Johnson has put in during the offseason. During a recent interview with WeAreSC.com, Johnson was quoted as saying this:

"Lane, he's a great guy. He's knows what he's doing. He's put together an all-star staff. He's a hard guy to please though, we've got to get on the field and show him we've got what it takes. I'm very confident right now about this coaching staff and out teamwork. Our preparation has been very good.  We're all going to be ready to practice. It's the first time I've been this excited for things to get started. I'm almost too excited, sometimes I need to remind myself to calm down and not look too much to the future. We've got a great quarterback in Matt Barkley too. He's improved in every phase of his game. We hang out, watch film. He knows every part of the game. I told him 'Me and you for the Heisman'"

Monte Kiffin is the mastermind behind the Tampa 2 defensive scheme, which is what the Trojans are used to running. He knows what he's doing and should be in charge of a defense that will be much-improved from last season.

For once in a long time, the Trojans are ready. The Trojans are hungry. The Trojans are anxious. The Trojans are determined.

All is good in Trojan land and things don't seem to be taking a turn for the worse for a long time. Take it to the bank: The USC Trojans will be crowned 2011 BCS National Champions.
