More than 17,000 MMA-crazed fans packed the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., to witness UFC 111, the state's first UFC event in almost five years. The 4 million live gate the promotion took in this Saturday likely means that the promotion will be back much sooner the next time around.
Fans in attendance witnessed notable performances by Kurt Pellegrino, Shane Carwin, Jared Hamman and Rodney Wallace, who found themselves $65,000 dollars richer after earning fight night bonuses.
Pellegrino upped his impressive MMA record to 15-4 and snatched the Submission of the Night bonus for his fight-ending rear naked choke against Fabricio Camoes.
Carwin not only earned the interim heavyweight title and a shot at current heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, but his impressive first-round knockout over Frank Mir earned him Knockout of the Night honors and extended the undefeated fighter's unprecedented streak of 12 straight first-round victories to start his career.
Hamman and Wallace battled it out on the undercard in an exciting slugfest over three rounds, which eventually saw Hamman take home the unanimous decision win.
