Auburn Football: Craig Stevens Moved To Weak Side Linebacker
Coach Gene Chizik and Coach Ted Roof have decided to move Craig Stevens to weak side linebacker. It is a move that has looked very good in spring practice so far. This is one of many moves that had Coach Roof smiling from ear to ear after Saturday's practice session.
This places Stevens in a position where pass coverage is often a requirement. Stevens is known to think quick on his feet. This will certainly be an asset to him in this set. The new position has worked well for him in practice so far.
This moves ElToro Freeman and his near in-human strength to strong side linebacker. He will have to shed blocks from offensive linemen and tight ends at this position. With his strength and speed he should do well with this.
Auburn is still a little thin at the linebacker position. Harris Gaston is still in an orange jersey while recovering from his broken arm. Daren Bates is out of spring practice recovering from surgery.
This leaves Jonathan Evans and Jessel Curry as backups for the front three. Jessel Curry is a true freshman and Harris Gaston is a red shirt freshman. It is expected that all of these players will be recovered and ready for the fall.
There will be a very talented group of young linebackers join the team for fall practice. They will be true freshmen without the benefit of a season of Auburn's strength and conditioning. Auburn fans should expect them to contribute more on special teams this year.
Auburn fans can expect good results from this position in 2010, barring a rash of injuries. This has to be one reason that Coach Ted Roof has that smile after the first practice in full pads.
