Cubs' Set Rotation for 2010
Chicago Cubs' manager Lou Pinella announced who would be filling in the 4th and 5th spot of the starting rotation Friday. As expected, Carlos Silva and Tom Gorzelanny will be filling out those spots.
Jeff Samardzija and Sean Marshall will be on the bullpen roster, but can become starters if an injury should occur.
Samardzjia, who had been hoping for a starting job, was disappointed about the decision.

He was a little disappointed," Piniella said. "He thought he had pitched well enough in spring training to stay in the rotation. I agreed with him. But unfortunately, we only have two spots.
"And then remember, [Ted] Lilly is ahead of schedule. In three weeks from now, we're going to have to make a decision again. With that in mind, let's put Marshall and Samardzija in places where they can help our baseball team."
Pinella mentioned that Marshall and Samardzija both pitched very well during spring training, their past experience and success as relievers factored in the decision.
The Cubs' bullpen is very young and immature compared to other teams, and that fact has lead to doubt in the strength of the bullpen, but Pinella doesn't share those same feelings.
"Am I concerned about anything? Absolutely not," Piniella said. "I said coming into camp that I liked our team ... and nothing that I've seen in spring training makes me feel any different.
