Lets Take a Look into the Future This Friday: Abner Mares

Tyler CurtisMar 26, 2010

This is the first of a weekly article that I will do on boxing prospects. They can be fighters with a handful of fights or someone like Abner Mares or in line for a title shot.

Mares was featured on last nights Fight Night Club in a tune-up fight. He dominated as expected and will now fight on May 22 for the IBF bantamweight title.

He looks like the real deal. He can body punch, he mixes combinations very well, and has some good pop. He isn’t the fastest fighter ever, but he has speed. He fights inside well and isn’t afraid to mix it up.

Fight I want to see: I am really looking forward to the Yonnhy Perez fight. It should be a great one, as Perez stands his ground and Mares attacks his opponent.

If Mares wins (and that’s a big if) I would like to see him go after No. 5 ring rated Joseph Agbeko. I think their styles would mesh perfectly and it would make for a very fan-friendly fight.

What's in his future: He already has the Perez fight set for May 22. It will be his first crack at a major title.

He will surely be ready for his first title (and Showtime) fight. If he wins this, there will be a lot of options for him and hopefully he will try to unify the division.
