Duke and Purdue Will Decide Who Should Have Been Number One Tonight.

Ro ShiellMar 26, 2010

The majority of sports fans like to think that Duke gets all the breaks. Coach Kzyzewski has the referees in his pockets and the selection committee are all Duke Graduates.

This year Duke earned a number one seed after sharing the ACC regular season top spot with Maryland and winning the ACC tournament.

Purdue was on track to receive a number one seed when their star player had a season ending injury. At that point most people thought they were done as a number one seed.

The Boilermakers went on to finish at the top of the Big Ten. However they did not win the Big Ten tournament.

This earned them a fourth seed, in the same bracket as Duke.

That still did not stop the naysayers from suggesting that Purdue should have received a number one seed instead of Duke.

Tonight the teams will decide who should have been number one.

If Duke should win, they retain their number one status.

If Purdue wins, they will become the team to beat in the south regional.

This may work out well for Purdue as their coach seems to like the underdog status.

He told Wish TV "when you start the tournament this year, you're not supposed to beat Siena or Texas A&M because you lose one of your starters."

"It starts to get old because nobody believes in them in their minds. So, you know, whatever it takes to motivate them to get them rolling, its fine."

Whether they are underdogs or not, Coach Painter should make on thing clear to his squad. Duke wants this. They need it, especially this senior class who had the misfortune to lose to Virginia Commonwealth, in the first round, in 2007.

“We just want to try to re-establish the program," Scheyer added. "Just get it back to where it's been."
