Even with Certain Swerves, Is WrestleMania XXVI Too Predictable?

Anakin CaneMar 24, 2010

On paper, with the amount of talent and the matches involved, WrestleMania XXVI has the makings to be the greatest ever. But as writers, fans, and the IWC, we see the card being too predictable.

I have written a few columns predicting the matches from a fan's perspective, with no knowledge of backstage writing. There too the matches came out way too predictable.

The event is becoming so predictable, the fans and writers are now predicting the swerves, and they sound legitimate. So what can the WWE do to make the swerves less predictable or the entire card less predictable?

Maybe the first thing is to just let the chips fall. No outside interference and let the matches happen. No one expects this, but it could become rather boring, unless the matches really do live up to the hype.

Now, if there are too many swerves and Dusty finishes, the fans are left with a bad taste about the event. The right mixture has to be put forth.

Money in the Bank and HHH/Sheamus could go as expected. Christian wins the briefcase and pick 'em between Sheamus and the Game.

Most fans expect the tag team match to go to ShowMiz with Morrison turning on Truth. How about Miz leaving the Big Show to get beat, then have Truthison win the titles. Let them have a good run as champs, to build to a Morrison/Truth fallout later down the road.

Orton is expected to beat his former Legacy charges. How about if DiBiase turns on Rhodes and then wins the match?

Most people expect Mysterio to win this match. I do not know what either competitor or the company gains by having Mysterio go over Punk. C.M. should win this match, outside interference of course by Gallows, Serena, and perhaps a returning Joey Mercury.

It would be fun to see Rey as a member of the Straight Edge Society. Maybe even have him embrace it down the road.

The ugliest event of the night will be once again having to hear, "My time is now, yadda yadda, yadda" and seeing John Cena hold the belt above his head and pointing to the WrestleMania sign. Disgusting.

This outcome seems to be the most obvious of the entire card. At least the writers could make it interesting by having a double turn. By the end of the match, Cena will be the villain.

The second most obvious is Bret beating McMahon. Most people want to see Hart destroy Vince. We can watch about six good ass-whipping minutes on Mr. McMahon, then let Bret get the 1...2...3.

The expected outcome would be to rehash the Montreal Screwjob. Let's get past this and have Hart beat Vince.

The only logical swerve I could think of would be to have the Hart Dynasty come out and screw Bret. The only way this works, of course, is if Bret is planning to remain in the WWE for a few more months.

Jericho vs. Edge. I would say 70 percent of the fans agree Edge walks out victorious with another 60 percent agreeing Christian cashes in the briefcase on his former partner. This match has two quality competitors in it and could be a classic without the aid of the swerve.

Let's get rid of the predictable swerve and go for something from left field. Jericho wins the match, and as his music gets interrupted by Christian's, Edge spears Jericho, allowing for Christian to come in and get the easy pinfall and the strap.

If the match is the last one for the evening, have the two friends and former tag champs embrace as the confetti falls. If it is not the last match, then have Edge spear Christian while holding up his newly won title. This at least keeps Edge a bad guy.

Here is the biggest swerve of the night for the Career versus the Streak: Let the two shine in a 40 minute classic bout with no outside interference.

Let HBK and the Undertaker go back and forth, hit each other's finishers a few times, and put on another classic WrestleMania matchup.
