Arsssshavin, Please Hush Up: Arsenal Don't Need More Players

John SmithMar 24, 2010

I love Andrei Arshavin. He´s the kind of athlete I have a lot of time for. Like Jeremy Roenick (ice hockey player—showing my Canadian roots there), Andy Roddick, Cristiano Ronaldo, he doesn't lax wyrical when in front of the press. He doesn´t resort to clichés about giving 100 percent and picking up three points for the team. He speaks his mind.

I especially like it when these players don´t play for my team.

It can be frustrating. Really frustrating.

Sometimes you just want the guy who puts his finger over his mouth every time he scores (in front of his home fans as well, bizarrely enough) to shut the ffff....ront door.

Today he talks about how he doubts our title chances, and against states that we need to buy more players. My response is twofold.

I also doubt that we can win the title. Lets face it, if Chelsea win tonight we're in third place again and although we've the easiest run-in, both teams need drop points against weaker opposition at the time of year when they should be the strongest. Domenech would probably say that the galaxies are not aligned in our favor. I just say that we've got it tough, cause I'm not an insane astrologer.

However, I don´t want one my star (no pun intended) players to lack belief. I don't want him to be thinking how we should have more players in our squad in order to win this title because you know what Mr. Arshaman, We can't get any more players. The transfer window is closed, so we've got who we've got and we've got to get as much as we can get out of the guys we've already gotten, get it?

Secondly, and more generally, I am actually in the very small camp of Arsenal fans who doesn't believe we need more players. I am in the very small camp which believes that we have a sufficient squad size to win the league, or a double, or a treble. However, we´ve been absolutely ravaged...no not ravaged not severe enough...raped with injuries this season.

I mean our third best CB has been our all season. We spent a huge chunk of the season without our first or second choice goalkeeper. Our best striker has been missing since November, and while he was missing my favorite player, the B52 bomber, was sidelined with a groin strain. Then Eduardo has been struggling to regain fitness and former. So we had to move Mr. Shhhh into a role which he can´t play.

Then both of our LBs went down injured for a long period of time, and Traore had to step in for a bit. Now Gael is back and playing well, but Mr. Gibbsy is out for the rest of the season.

Cesc has been in and out with hamstring problems, and up until recently Theo Walcott had played three minutes all season.

Song missed football with the ACN this January, Denilson broke his back, and Diaby has been in and out more than a gigolo. Rosicky has been one of our fit players this season. OH MY EFFING GOD.

Anyway, you get my point, don´t you? We have a shit load of excellent players, and I think during January we did the right thing, Sol was a great buy. He's performed very very well, and I think he looks cool in the new kit, plus we get to see him take on the Spurs one more time, so that should be awesome. I think if he´s not starting we should bring him on if we are winning by two.

NOOOO not to rub it in! No not at all. So he can get a winners' medal.

Pffffhhh yeah right.

Andrei would probably tell me to just "SHHHHHHHH ArsenalAdam."
