2010 NFL Draft: Should The New England Patriots Draft Tim Tebow?
With about a month until the big day, talks of the upcoming NFL Draft are heating up.
One of the increasingly popular conversation topics have been about Florida star QB Tim Tebow.
Tebow is a two-time National Champion, and a Heisman Trophy winner. However, critics have questioned his ability to transition into the NFL. Now it seems like everyone has been debating over where he may be drafted.
Some say the Jaguars should take him at 10 in order to resurrect their fan base. Others are saying he is a third or fourth round prospect at best. In my mind, he’s a perfect fit for the Patriots in the second round.
Aside from his shaky mechanics, Tim Tebow has everything a team looks for in their starting NFL QB. He’s got a fiery passion for the game accompanied by a tremendous work ethic, he’s a commanding leader on and off the field, he possesses impressive athleticism, and has all the physical tools necessary to make all the throws.
Scouts interviewing the charismatic QB are amazed by his oozing confidence and overall flawless character. He has all the traits that will make him an enticing choice to Robert Kraft, Bill Bellicheck, and the rest of the Patriot management. He’s truly a once-in-a-generation caliber of player.
In order to put the final piece in the puzzle, he will need a couple years of time to sit on the sidelines and learn from the coaches. This is why New England, a successful team with a star QB in place, is a perfect fit.
The Patriots have three second round draft selections this year, and could use any of them to draft the QB. In addition, in my mock draft , I have them trading out of their 22nd pick with the Washington Redskins, in order to accumulate even more picks, which has been a trend for the team lately.
In New England, Tebow will be given the opportunity to learn from one of the best in the business, and will be well prepared and in the best possible situation to succeed when he eventually does get on the field.
Moreover, New England proved they can transform a raw product into a superstar QB. They drafted Tom Brady with the 199th selection and, a year later in 2001, turned him into a Super Bowl MVP.
Fast forward 10 years later, Brady is one of the best quarterbacks in the league and has three rings. At the age of 32, though, his NFL career will be winding down in the next couple of years. At best, he’s probably got another three or four productive years left. When the time comes New England will be in a sticky situation, because they don’t have a successor at the position, which is why it makes sense for the team to pull the trigger on Tebow.
Come draft day, it will only take one team to make the decision, and in my mind, for both Tim Tebow’s and the Patriot’s sake, I’m hoping they make the wise decision and take Tebow.
