Are We Looking at a "Rhone" and "Mourinho" Era at Liverpool FC ?

Kaustav BoseMar 21, 2010

The fact of the matter is that Liverpool fc is obviously looking for investors to bail them out of this financial crisis that they have managed to "place" themselves in. Obviously it needs little mention that this "cash-strapped" tag is hugely because of the LBO (leveraged buyout) of the club by Hicks and Gillette in 2007. The simple process of taking reins of the club took Liverpool from a debt of about 45mGBP  to about 290m GBP by 1 year and has been increasing ever since..
However now with the timeline to pay a major chunk of the debt off to Royal Bank of Scotland fast (July 2010) approaching H&G find themselves in a position where they necessarily need investors to aid them out of this soup.
Presumably one of the best things that seems to happen at Liverpool FC has been the appointment of Christian Purslow as a Managing Director replacing Rick Parry. A Harvard Business School pass-out, Purslow has managed a 80m GBP deal for sponsoring Liverpool fc's shirts with Standard Chartered. However, Purslow has been busy searching interested investors of late, and after a lot of rumours, Private equity group RHONE Group seem seriously interested but only at the clause of clearing the debt owed in july to RBS for a majority stake in the Clubs affairs.(a rumoured 34% stake) which would significantly reduce the stake of the current owners to 33% each from their present 50% stake.

With the deadline of upto Easter given to the club, negotiations are thought to be on.
Although Purslow claims there are half a dozen investors lined up. Though Rhone look the the most serious one, some other also could steal the show with a more lucrative bid. This would mean Liverpool's considerable down-sizing of Liverpool's debt and make Liverpool FC a more lucrative for further investment.

However, with such a dismal season for the club, who were touted to be serious title contenders after the flattering last season's performance, Liverpool FC need some major changes at the Club. Right from initiating the much talked about stadium building talks at Stanley Park to Buying some Outstanding players for the club to be competitive enough and win the Top Honours both domestically and also in Europe. With Investors coming in that should be settled.

The foresaid looking an imminent possibility, could also signal serious revamping of the team and coaching staff at the RED part of Merseyside.

The man who has been under-fire the most for this season at Liverpool Fc has been undoubtedly, Rafa Benitez. Although personally I belive he has played his role in taking the club a few strides ahead into the Elite league after the hopeless performances in the decade that preceded his coming at the club, Rafa certainly deserves some of the blame. But reliving him of his duties could be a very myopic decision that the management may take.
However, with new investors coming to the helm, Rafa's "wait and watch" techniques may well be put to rest as they may have a radically different opinion about matters and look for more instant remedial solutions.

Given such a stage, ENTER Jose Mourinho, a man who has already proved his credentials times and again. Mourinho has been a legend at Chelsea and can be easily considered as a "Father Figure" to their evolution as a European Football Super Power.
Jose has been a very expressive coach and has made his visions clear that his dream lay in England, where he wants to chieve his "Victory of Life", in his own words. An admirer of Steven Gerrard , Mourinho should gleefully accept the offer to coach Liverpool Fc if he sees that the Club has some really passionate Owners and his forseeable long-term future at the club (much like Sir Alex at Manchester United) unlike his earlier spell at Chelsea.

Honestly speaking, I doubt that a lot of fans would really be disgruntled to see Mourinho at Liverpool FC. The only reason most fans protest replacing Benitez is the amount of money that would be involved in the process of replacing the gaffer, and , the concern that no one better would be ready to take Rafa's seat of managing a Cash-strapped outfit. However, the later would not be a problem with New investors. The only other concern with Mourinho is that though he has been a "Genius" , he has been greatly fickle-minded and even Championship victories has not been able to keep him at his clubs, whether it be the Champions league victory for FC Porto or successive unprecedented domestic league championships at Chelsea. (at Chelsea he also had millions at his disposal.) But then again, he came to chelsea to prove that his job at Porto was not a blip. After he left Chelsea he did mention though that he always knew after his arrival at Chelsea that he would not remain there for long.

Although which sequence of events really follow at the Merseyside club at the moment looks uncertain, however, Liverpool fc are still a very attractive club and should any of the interested six investors have their way which seems only a matter of time before we see some serious shift in ownership at Liverpool Football Club, and if Liverpool fail the Top four and/or The Europa Silverware, who knows (though just for 1 real bad season) these may well be Rafa Benitez's "End of Days" at the club which he loves so badly. However with Real Madrid calling he would not be too distraught at the loss of job.

But if Mourinho really has long term plans to be fulfilled with a job at Liverpool Fc, is hired and achieves anything like what he has been throughout his career , the Reds fans would only be overjoyed, but its just a long wait of two months or a little more remains before the air really clears up.
