Can you imagine what would have happened if Sol Campbell had not been signed. No disrespect to big Phil Senderos, but I cannot see a title chasing team have a centre back pairing of Senderos and Silvestre and continue to sustain a challenge for the league.
In the summer, the rumours were flying around that a certain Patrick Vieira could be brought back to the club and the fans responded by chanting his name during the Pre season tournament named the ‘Emirates cup’.
Instead, Mr Wenger chose not to bring him back for reasons that he did not disclose publicly. Looking back, perhaps that was the right decision. Vieira is on 150k a week at Man city where as Sol Campbell is on a lot less and instead get’s bonuses for the games he plays.
Personally, I would have loved to see Patrick Vieira back at the club I love as he is a player I love, however, with his wages and his injuries, I’m not to sure how many games he would have actually played.
Sol Campbell, on the other hand, has played in quite a few games this season and has been exceptional. The fact that William Gallas got an injury straight after Sol Campbell signed has made the signing even greater.
Sol has played seven games and four of those in Premier league if you count the substitute appearance at Villa Park and two in the Champions league. He has scored one goal and kept three clean sheets.
With Sol, you get 100% commitment, a bulk of experience and physical attributes such as height and power both on the ground and in the air, something that Arsenal may have lacked in recent seasons.
After hearing interviews with players and people involved with the club, it’s obvious to me how much difference Sol has made in the dressing room. He has been involved in the tactical side and has used his knowledge on opposition players and teams to Arsenal’s advantage.
I know this is a big if, but if Arsenal were to win either the Premiership or the Champions League then I think the re-signing of Sol Campbell would be one of the best decisions and signings made by Mr Wenger, but maybe ever.
Come on you Arsenal.
