Bills Continue To Shore Up Defense...But What About Tebow?

Brian MazurekMar 20, 2010

Well, I've got mixed feelings about the Buffalo Bills' free agents signings of Dwan Edwards and Andra Davis. One good and one questionable.

Davis (pictured above) is a good pick-up from the Broncos as he should be an immediate starter in the 3-4 defense at linebacker. A good pick-up and one I am not going to complain about as we need a linebacker.

That means no more safeties shifting to linebacker!!!!

Finally a good signing. Kudos to general manager Buddy Nix for once.

Dwan Edwards, the second signing, is accustom to the 3-4 defense to be run by coordinator George Edwards but sends up a red flag for me. Not totally all the way the pole, however, but halfway.

Certainly, Edwards showed he can play as he appeared in all 18 games last year for the Baltimore Ravens, a great defensive team.

But he did have a spinal cord injury in 2008. He was cleared by the Ravens to play last season but WHY didn't he pass the physical given to him by Denver and Seattle recently.

He did pass Buffalo's and obviously Baltimore's last year. But did Edwards sustain some type of relapse that showed up in the Denver and Seattle physical this year after he went through the rigors of an 18-game schedule Baltimore went through?

Obviously the Bills are convinced he's healthy or they would not have signed him. But with the rash of injuries Buffalo always seems to be blessed with, why sign a guy who couldn't pass the medical exam given by two teams? Edwards' season or career could just be a hit away.

Also, head coach Chan Gailey continues to say that the starting quarterback job is wide open.

But he did leave the door open about picking up a veteran quarterback and/or draft pick.

Well, don't wait. The quicker you can get someone in town to learn the system, the quicker Trent Edwards and/or Ryan Fitzpatrick can get out of town.

I don't think Buddy Nix or Chan Gailey are tipping their hands but I think that Tim Tebow has shown up on the Bills' radar screen.

The Buffalo Bills need a "name" quarterback. Whether Tebow pans out as an NFL quarterback or not, let's see him develop in Buffalo, not somewhere else.

But one thing is for certain, there's no bigger winner on the Bills team right now than Tebow and I believe he would become an instant leader in the now-leaderless Buffalo locker room.

If Tebow has the backing of Jim Kelly, it's good enough for me.
