Montreal Screwjob:- What if there was a Role Reversal?

Jon Crow JrMar 19, 2010

Last night I was just sitting at home praying for something/anything that would kill even a spec of time. When all seemed lost and i was reaching for the ironing board, i had a brainwave. I buried myself deep into some of my old, broken boxes and found the Shawn Michaels From the Vault DVD. After a couple of matches into the disc; what the majority of the Loyal wrestling community believe is the best match in history erupted through the screens, the Shawn Michaels vs Bret Hart IronMan Match. We all remember this WrestleMania 12 classic so well that I, along with most people reading this, could clearly see moves devastating both wrestlers minutes before they were even in the minds of either man. However, we all remember that one true memory making night cleary, yet this wasn't the only time these specific wrestlers grappled in the ring. Another time that they met was a cold november night in 1997. Shawn Michaes and Bret Hart would both battle it out once again for the gold, but this time their would be no happy ending. Why?, do you really need telling? If so i shall give you two words, Montreal and Screwjob.

This brings me to the whole point of this particular article. What if the Screwjob was reversed. What if Shawn got screwed and Bret kept the title? What would have happened to WWE and even their bitter rivals WCW. Would it affect the company in todays world.

First of all i'll get my opinion out of the way. I believe Shawn Michaels is a thousand times better than Bret Hart. There i said it! But Shawn at this time in his career had just come into his prime. He had only recently won his first WWF Title the year before. While Bret Hart on the other hand was just leaving his. Now straight after this now infamous incident i believe Bret was the bigger name and the wrestler out of the two more people around the world had heard off.  Therefore the WWF should have kept him right? For a short time WWF might have been better off with Bret because of his popularity and his time with the company. However, a while after Bret would be settling down and maybe not be able to perform to the usual high standards that was regulary expected of him. While Shawn meanwhile would be transforming into the pure icon that is pictured at the mere mention of his name.

Now where did Bret go after he got Screwed? The WWF's biggest, strongest and most deadly rival known as World Championship Wrestling or to put simply WCW. If Shawn had got screwed and gone there, at the time it would have been an unbelievable success for WCW, but not as big as Bret switching sides. But as time wore on Shawn would have become that Showstopper, that headliner and that main event star we know with WCW and Bret would be limping round the ring and putting on 10 minute maximum matches. Shawn's talent might have converted many fan's and got so many more valuble rating's for WCW. For all we know WWF might have lost the wrestling worlds biggest war. Vinces beloved company dare i say it, might have gone out of business.

That would be the major change that would shake the grappling foundations today. Despite this, there would easily be others moments, matches and memories that the fans would miss. For instance, the iconic DX. If Shawn had gone we would never have had been treated to the wild antics of arguably the best Tag Team to ever grace the squared circle; All there matches and moments would never had hit are screens. Another area hit would be the one event circled on everyones calender, the one night where the wrestling community sits down and witnesses history together. This being Vince McMahon's immortal vision known only as WrestleMania. Could you imagine what the grandaddy of them all, the pinnacle of sports entertainment would be like without the Heartbreak Kid on the card. Many peolple, including me, believe he makes a good WrestleMania an amazing Wrestlemania. All his mind-blowing matches would have faded into a unrealistic fantasy

Now for all i know this might have never happened and could be entirely wrong. But it's an idea and an opinion. I feel if the roles were reversed WCW would have lasted longer. Would they have one? Who knows. Please feel free to leave any comments about what you think would have happened if in that one night in Canada, The Roles were Reversed.
