How You Are Going To Watch The Tourny With Your Boys?

Collin CooperMar 16, 2010

The NCAA tournament is almost upon us!

They are some of the best days of the year to take off from work, order a pizza and just plop down on the couch all day with a few of your friends. The weather is finally starting to crack (those in the Snow Belt can really appreciate the white stuff gone for good).

What did you say, you didn't request vacation days?

OK, so college basketball wasn't on your radar and now it's too late. That work project really isn't as important as a few days of kicking it with your boys... it isn't.

No worries, we are going to get you through this so you don't miss a minute of the first and second round and here is how.

1. Forward this article or one like it to your friends. Watching these games alone isn't  fun. So find out where the nearest games are and go watch the games live!

2. Start as soon as you can hamming it up. Talk about how you went to a little kid's birthday party this weekend and were totally exposed to coughing and sneezing rug rats.

3. Bring in props- this is going to cost a little bit of coin. The more you spend the better. Bring in Emergen-C, Coldeze, and Airborne. Display all of these around your computer key board, or somewhere in very plain site. Also warn people not to get close to you, that you don't want them to get what you are coming down with.

4. Don't talk about college basketball, your bracket or anything else to gives anyone the inkling that you are die hard sports fan. If someone brings it up, just say you haven't been paying much attention to college basketball this year. If people know you are a sports fan, then they know something isn't right with you. It will help your case.

5. Do not go out for drinks or do anything social Wednesday night... nothing. This means even with non working friends... being spotting "out" would be a deal breaker.

6. Ask people around the office for advice on beating colds. The works especially well to butter up with receptionist. She is the going to be messenger and her delivery of the news to the bosses is vital.

7. This is a key step.

Remember that you don't have to fool your boss, just your immediate co-workers.

Your boss probably has no idea what you do all day, all he/she will notice is that you aren't around. The boss undoubtedly will fish for answers from your co-workers, so if you can get them to say something like; "Yeah, he was taking Vitamin C all day yesterday" you will be golden.

8. Call very early in the AM, before the boss gets in. Talk to the secretary only and breathe only through your month. Ask to leave a message on your boss's answering machine.

Don't go into details.

Short and sweet is best here.

9. If the boss calls you directly answer it but be prepared to go with a ready made excuse. State something like you just dropped some Nyquil and you will be completely indisposed for the whole day. This rules out the possibility of him/her negotiating a remote work arrangement.

10. Repeat steps five to eight and nine as day two of the tournament is Friday. Next thing you know, you'll be enjoying a four day weekend. When work comes around again on Monday, make sure that you are 110 percent back.

And whatever you do, don't feel guilty. You productivity would have been nil on Thursday and Friday anyway as all you would have been doing was checking out the scores on-line, right?  Honestly though if your job is in jeopardy or you have little ones that are dependent on you... maybe give this whole thing a second thought.

Good luck as I will be living vicariously through you. My sick days were burned today and yesterday as I am battling something that makes the H1N1 look like a walk in the park.
