Johnny Majors Selective Of Praise: Grudge Against Fulmer?

John WhiteMar 16, 2010

Tennessee's favorite Lynchburgian has officially given Dooley the nod.

At a recent Kiwanis function,  former Tennessee head-coach, Johnny Majors bestowed bountiful praise on Tennessee's newly-crowned Coach Dooley, citing a long relationship that proved his desired work-ethic, and general respect for all aspects of the game.

He went on to proclaim that Dooley's success was a matter of time as confidence was an infinite well of talent and lineage. He remarked on all things great and good, and just when you start to think it's a good day, Coach Majors offered one reason for Coach Dooley's imminent and immediate success. (Paraphrased) It would lean to the fact that recently departed head coach Lane Kiffin and company had re-invented a dysfunctional program and steered it in the right direction.

Look, I know the circle of life. Something dies so that something else might live. Tennessee was at the bottom of Kiffin's circle of life. As much as I respect Coach Majors, at this stage in the rebuilding process the last thing Tennessee needs is yet one more reminder of the things Kiffin did for Tennessee.

Okay, Kiffin did some good things at Tennessee, no one is saying that he didn't, but all of those things really don't matter because of the manner in which he left. I will give him credit for holding the press conference, that did take guts.

After all, it was the equivalent of standing on your girlfriends doorstep, and telling her  father that his ex-girlfriend just called, and well...your daughter just isn't as pretty as her. Benedict Arnold had guts too. Right?

The worst of it is Johnny still holds a grudge. Coach Majors did nothing to Coach Dooley by saying what he said, but he sure stuck it to former Tennessee head-coach Phillip Fulmer. It was all in the small print, nevermind the fact that Fulmer did what Johnny couldn't do, beat Alabama consistently, and win a National Championship.

Where's the love? Coach Fulmer didn't put Johnny M in the cardiac wing. All Fulmer did was win when Majors couldn't.

You know how your Mom can take a little jab at you? You know; you are all sitting at the dinner table eating, and having a nice time, when Mom brings up your track record with women and starts asking when the grandchildren will be birthed?

Then she starts talking about the girl you are trying to forget and all the other girls you have dated in the past, much to the dismay of your current new squeeze (who actually like the other girls), who is sitting quietly sipping her soup, smiling at your mother wondering to herself if she will die sooner or later.

They all love ya Johnny M but come on... shh.

We all know about glass houses, and coach Fulmer hoisted him high above the media when the press promted him about Tennessee's success. Honestly, do you think Pitt would have come calling if Coach Fulmer had thrown him under the bus?

Tennessee has moved on, but to re-set the record straight AGAIN. Here it is, in print AGAIN:

Kiffin gone. Really? Kiffin is, and always has been USC.

Nobody wanted Tennessee but Dooley, feelings hurt.

Lots of damage control. Lots of damage control. Lots of damage control. Thanks Lane.

Dooley scramble, recruit, smile and be humble. Hey, where did those recruits go? Thanks Lane and Coach O.

Everybody smile at Coach Dooley, be nice, he brought his family. Rest of SEC happy Kiffin is gone, no more helicopters. Reflection. Bitter feelings. Denial. Defensive.

Happy.

Now, may we PLEASE move on?
