2010 Tournament Mascot Showdown: East 1st Round

Joe Tansey@JTansey90Featured ColumnistMarch 15, 2010

(1) Kentucky Wildcats vs. (16) East Tennessee State Buccaneers

A wildcat is a cat that is adaptable to its surroundings and is a popular football offense.

Buccaneers were pirates that pillaged ships in the Caribbean in the 17th century.

This is an interesting matchup that could go either way.

(8) Texas Longhorns vs. (9) Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Longhorns are cattle that have big horns and are intelligent. Longhorn is also a chain of steakhouses.

Demon Deacon came from a description of a 1923 Wake football game saying the team "fought like demons". Deacon was added and so was a mascot with a tuxedo and top hat.

Since a longhorn can spear and kill a demon deacon, Texas gets the win.

(5) Temple Owls vs. (12) Cornell Big Red

An owl has binocular vision but is farsighted and it can not turn its head around. Also, Owl was a wise Winnie the Pooh character.

Big Red is a gum made by Wrigley's, describes Clifford the Big Red Dog, and a favorite soda of John Cougar Mellencamp.

Any matchup with references of Winnie the Pooh, Clifford, and Mellencamp is a good one but the Big Red get the advantage here.

(4) Wisconsin Badgers vs. (13) Wofford Terriers

Badgers are short-legged, heavy set relatives of skunks.

Terriers are used to control rodents and are fearless.

Fearless dogs that control rodents, in this case we take the badger as a rodent, are the winners.

(6) Marquette Golden Eagles vs. (11) Washington Huskies

Golden Eagles actually exist, unlike the rest of the golden teams, that are speedy and have sharp talons.

Huskies were originally used as sled dogs, have different color eyes, thick fur, and appear in the Cuba Gooding Jr. classic, Snow Dogs .

I'm taking the Golden Eagles just because of the Snow Dogs reference.

(3) New Mexico Lobos vs. (14) Montana Grizzlies

Lobo is the spanish word for wolf. Features include being the leader of the pack.

Grizzlies are active mammals that feed on salmon and are known for their long hibernation period. Grizzly Bear is a name of a successful indie rock band.

It is no longer winter, so the Grizzlies are waking up and are bigger and better than a lobo.

(7) Clemson Tigers vs. (10) Missouri Tigers

The first of two matchups with the same mascot for both teams, so the tiebreaker is team color.

Missouri's gold and black is closer to a real tiger than orange and blue, so Mizzou advances.

(2) West Virginia Mountaineers vs. (15) Morgan State Bears

Mountaineers explore the areas of mountains and other hilly terrains.

A bear, as stated before, is a big mammal that eats fish and hibernates.

Mountaineers have muskers that can kill bears.

Vote on the poll on this page or comment for the team you want to advance to the second round preview on Wednesday.
