"We Need At Least Four-Five Big Signings at Liverpool": Fernando Torres

Kaustav BoseMar 14, 2010

If you want to compete for the honors, you must be able to spend, the message is clear from the Liverpool  frontman and undoubtedly one of the most dedicated Reds player of this forgetful season for Liverpool fc .He wants to play for a more formidable Reds outfit and that has taken him to the limit to express his open desire to see players at the club who would provide the team with a more competitive  edge..As he further states he also wants to do more for the Fans , who deserve victories for such support..but thats only possible by new signings and world class ones at that.

Though its not the first time that Torres has made such a comment , he had also commented on the same lines during the winter transfer window, that however fell on dumb ears. Tom Hicks respondedin his own way saying that Winter market lacks quality, and that the Summer spending would be "Big"..

Going by the sequence of events that have occured under the American Owners Liverpool fc fans have the right to belive that such a promise by Hicks could also go unfulfilled.

However, Christian Purslow has been working hard to find investors and some things have worked out after his arrival like the lucrative shirt sponsorship deal..There are also a lot of interest from investors all around in providing the money required by the Reds.

With money coming in, what Torres is trying to imply here is that squad building should be the utmost priority. Four or Five additions who add value tothe club would not come cheap but such deals have to be well planned and taken after a lot of retrospection. In such a way that Liverpool could do away with major signings for the coming two-three years at least (just like Chelsea) so as to fund the stadium building as well progress in all levels of the top-class competitions.Even if the spending need not be as astronomical as the blues re-inforcements are highly necessary..

Clearly last year was a great year for Liverpool but that came about because Torres and Gerrard carried out a phenomenal partnership of sorts among them and the link up play was also excellent with Alonso and company contributing greatly. However, Torres and Gerrad have taken the responsibility solely by themselves far too often and to do so season after season in England (with the physical game that is played ) is very tough..

It is ceratinly this burden that Torres wants to lighten so that Liverpool stay competitive enough for the honors..It also perfectly understandable what he would have felt after his substitute this season for along time season was a player like N'gog, for a team  aspiring to be in the Top four that was a very significant fall of quality..

Rafael Benitez has also been vocal about his financial demands at the club, but he has been very poor in selecting players for the main team especially last summer. Buying an injured player as a substitute for a player as important as Alonso to Liverpool, was clearly not sensible enough.

However with buys like Mascherano, Benayoun, Reina, Alonso and also Torres , Rafa has proved that he is capable of better buys.

With  frustration growing among the top players in the club, with the results of late. If Rafa was to stay at Liverpool fc and Investors do pump in money, Torres's opinion should be given adequate weightage to give the REDs those glorius days back..

Moreover with players of genuine qwality around repeatedly speaking out their desire to play for the club, Rafa should have committed individuals to choose from.

Whatever be the outcome of this year's EPL,and maybe eyeing a mass overhaul, there is little doubt as to which Premier league club will grab the limelight the most ,Come Summer 2010.
