NCAA Bracket 2010: Nothing More For The Florida Gators To Do Now

Jim FolsomMar 12, 2010

Will it be enough? 21 wins and 12 losses. Not exactly a stellar record for the Florida Gators' basketball team. But is it enough to get them into the NCAA Tournament? We'll know in a couple of days.

I think it is. I think UF is an NCAA Tournament team. I say this because I watched them play almost every game. And there was not one game I can recall that they didn't have a shot to win late into the game. The most points this team lost by was 12. In all three of those games, against Syracuse, Kentucky, and Xavier, the score was tied with under 10:00 to play.

Florida has beaten Michigan State, Florida State, and Tennessee, who are NCAA locks. They lost by 12 or less to Kentucky twice, Syracuse, Vanderbilt twice, Tennessee, and Richmond, who are also tournament locks. They also beat Ole Miss and Miss St., who are bubble teams. They also had 12 points or fewer in losses to Miss St. and Xavier, who are also bubble teams.

This team has only one embarrassing loss all year. It was a one point loss to South Alabama. Name another bubble team that can say they only had one embarrassing loss this year. Mississippi State? How about Rider? Western Kentucky? How about Senior Day getting run out of your home gym? How about Auburn?

Admittedly, the Gators have been rather pedestrian the last three years. The records have definitely not been up to UF standards, especially when compared to the previous three. Billy Donovan deserves whatever heat he gets, especially if the NCAA gives him the shaft again this year.

But that should not take away from the fact that this year's team should be in the Tournament. You may not be happy with the fact that the Gators are going home before the weekend for the third straight SEC Tournament, and you would have the right to be less than thrilled. But this team has done enough to get in.

Of course it's not up to us is it? So Gator fans everywhere will be rooting for favorites the rest of the weekend and sweating out Selection Sunday. Sure would have been nice to win tonight so we could enjoy the rest of the weekend.
