Manchester United CEO David Gill: A Hypocrite ?

Vikram SinghMar 12, 2010

The Green and Gold movement started by Manchester United supporters against the current owners of the club Glazers, is gaining momentum day by day with fans clearly showing their displeasure to the owners who were present at Old Trafford, for the tie against AC Milan. David Beckham's gesture of donning the Green and Gold scarf after the match has definitely given a boost to the campaign.

The campaign has been subject to criticism too. David Gill, CEO of Manchester United in 2004 said that "Debt is the road to ruin", but in 2010 he has criticized the supporters who are protesting against the Glazers regime.

This criticism of the protests has not gone down well with the protestors. According to them David Gill is criticising the protests to keep his job and they claim that his wages have increased enormously since 2006.

The relationship between David Gill and protestors has deteriorated to such an extent, that he was confronted by a irate supporter at an event, where the supporter bombarded David Gill with questions regarding the debt and the bond issue, to which the replies given by David Gill were not convincing.

David Gill has done an excellent job at United regarding tranfers, wages, merchandising, inspite of the burden of enormous debts. Manchester United have had lot of success on the field as well as off it, new sponsorship deals with Hublot, Airtel Bharti(India) were accomplished by him.

Ironically, most of these successes were accomplished in the Glazer regime.

So what do you people feel , was David Gill right in criticising the Green and Gold movement , on the basis of what we have achieved under the Glazers ownership ?

My opinion No. Using onfield success and new sponsorship deals as a shield to protect Glazers who have milked the club for their own benefit and jeopardised the future of the club, disrespected the feeling of the fans, is incorrect.
