Paul Hewitt and Georgia Tech: Time's Just About Up

Jeffrey FannMar 6, 2010

*POP!*

That's the sound of Georgia Tech's bubble bursting.

After losing 88-82 to Virginia Tech, the Jackets fall to 19-11 (7-9 in the ACC). That's not going to get Georgia Tech into the NCAAs. What was particularly disturbing was the inability to match the Hokies intensity.

Virginia Tech wanted it more and played like it. They deserve the NCAA bid they will now get.
Georgia Tech on the other hand has one last chance to get to the big dance. Next week is the ACC tournament, where they need, at minimum, two wins to even sniff the bubble. If they win one game, it won't be enough. Even two wins may not be enough.
This was a critical game for Georgia Tech, and they didn't get it done.
But hasn't that been the story of Paul Hewitt?
Since his 2003-2004 Final Four team, his tenure has been marked by underachievement. He just isn't getting it done, and Georgia Tech fans deserve better, much better.
Hewitt is a strong recruiter. But the fact that this year's team is sporting three McDonald's All-Americans, has been without any major injuries during most of the year, and will probably miss the NCAA is a travesty.
Hewitt's near $7 million buyout leaves Georgia Tech in a hard position. Financially strapped, can they afford to buy out Hewitt?
I have the feeling Jacket fans are ready to donate in order to hasten Hewitt's departure barring an unlikely run in the ACC tournament.
