Arsene Wenger Backs Theo Walcott to Have Great Future

Andrew EwingMar 5, 2010

Arsene Wenger has leapt to the defence of winger Theo Walcott following criticism after England's 3-1 win over Egypt on Wednesday night, insisting the 20-year-old has a "great future" ahead of him.

Walcott has struggled with injuries and the game against Egypt was only his eighth start of the season.

This has led many to speculate over whether Walcott will make Fabio Capello's World Cup squad this summer.

However, the Gunner's boss opposes Chris Waddle's view that Walcott "doesn't understand the game."

"I believe he has not only a football brain but he has a brain," the Frenchman said at his pre-match press conference.

"I believe Theo will be a great football player, he is very young, he will be 21 this year, and he will have a great future.

"I believe in him because he has a fantastic attitude, he's an intelligent boy and he is highly motivated. These players always improve."

Walcott cost the Gunners £5 million when he moved from Southampton in 2006 and was expected to go on to much greater things.
He has yet to fulfill his true potential, making 124 appearances and scoring 15 goals.
Waddle's comments could be considered justified after Walcott's performances so far this season, his decision making and first touch letting him down on a number of occasions.
However, Wenger is right to defend his player. Walcott has struggled with niggling injuries and is low on confidence and his managers words can inspire Walcott to prove him right.
Wenger's praise will help him concentrate on playing his game which can give defenders real problems.
