College Basketball Champions of the Decade from WhatIfSports.com

Jake WestrichMar 5, 2010

Residents of Krzyzewskiville will rest easy tonight.

Snuggled in their sleeping bags and huddled together inside tents stationed on the well-kept lawn outside Cameron Indoor Stadium, the boys and girls of Duke University dream of yesteryear.

Their Blue Devils have risen to the top of Whatifsports.com's college basketball Champions of the Decade power ranking.

I can hear the hissing (or is that cussing?) all the way from Chapel Hill.

Whatifsports.com's college basketball simulation engine took the past 10 NCAA national basketball champions and threw them together in a round-robin tournament.

Every champion "played" the other nine title teams 51 times. The simulator, available to YOU for FREE , generated the team's winning percentage and average points per game.

2000-01 Duke Blue Devils86.895.0
2004-05 North Carolina Tar Heels79.892.9

Duke set an NCAA record over a four-year span by winning 133 games from 1997-2001. Coach K and company lost only 15 times during that same stretch. The winning tradition culminated with the university's third national championship in school history.

The Blue Devils, love them or hate them, were loaded on the court at all times that season. Even with the absence of Carlos Boozer , who missed a good chunk of time due to injury, the Devils were able to lean on the talents of Jason Williams , Shane Battier , Chris Duhon , and Mike Dunleavy Jr.

Duke's run through the 2000-01 NCAA tournament nearly hit a brick wall in the Final Four. All it ended up being was a couple passing turtles. The Maryland Terrapins nearly ended the Devils' ride by jumping out to a 39-17 lead before Coach K ripped into his team, and Duke, like they have so many times before, rallied back to win.

In the Whatifsports.com world, the Devils avoided the need for any second-half rallies. They won over 86 percent of their games against the rest of the field, scoring 95 points per game.

Unlike the all-time series, where North Carolina holds heavy bragging rights with a 130-98 record against Duke, the Tar Heels are Tobacco Road's second best champion of the last decade.

Duke's 2001 class did have something in common with this UNC group: The Devils and Heels saw four players graduate to the NBA as first round picks.

Marvin Williams , Raymond Felton , Rashad McCants , and the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, Sean May , were the driving force behind a strong North Carolina crew. The Heels ruined Illinois' near-perfect season, handing the Illini only their second loss in the national title game.

North Carolina hung another banner from the rafters of the Dean Dome and won nearly 80 percent of their games against the other nine title teams.

2007-08 Kansas Jayhawks53.383.6
2003-04 Connecticut Huskies46.780.8
2006-07 Florida Gators46.584.1
2008-09 North Carolina Tar Heels46.189.6
2001-02 Maryland Terrapins45.587.5
2005-06 Florida Gators43.283.1
1999-00 Michigan State Spartans30.681.3
2002-03 Syracuse Orange21.181.2

The remaining eight national title teams proved the profound adage of "you win some, you lose some." The 2007-08 Kansas Jayhawks, who needed a last-minute trey by Mario Chalmers to crush Memphis' dreams, were the only other title team to win more than 50 percent of their games.

Considering the youth of the team and Carmelo Anthony 's ability to find lightning in a bottle in March of 2003, it's no big surprise Syracuse only managed to win a little more than a fifth of their games against several other well-seasoned programs.

Soon, the excitement of another NCAA tournament will be upon us, and on the night of April 5 inside Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, we will begin a new decade of champions. Will one of the previous 10 champs introduce scissors to net once again, or will a new team emerge?

Until the questioned is answered, the Cameron Crazies ask that you please extinguish your one shining moment.

Residents in Krzyzewskiville need some shut-eye.
