Fantasy Baseball: Value WHIP Options

Dan Haren slid just out of your grasp. That’s OK. There are still plenty of value pitchers to help you post a low WHIP.

Brett Anderson, Oakland A’s

This should be his last year as a value pick. He’s a hot commodity that is moving up the ranks.

Scott Baker, Minnesota Twins

Baker started slow but finished strong. His last two seasons Baker has WHIPs of 1.18 and 1.19.

Mark Buehrle, Chicago White Sox

It should be no surprise that Buehrle will give you a solid WHIP. He contributes everywhere outside of strikeouts.

John Danks, Chicago White Sox

Danks has WHIPs of 1.23 and 1.28 the past two seasons.

Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox

Not a sexy pick, but Floyd has WHIPs of 1.26 and 1.23 the past two years. Look for more of the same in 2010.

Matt Garza, Tampa Bay Rays

Don’t expect a super low WHIP from Garza, but he has posted 1.24 and 1.26 WHIPs the past two years. Expect something in that range.

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies

Last year was a borderline disaster for Hamels, leading many to question if he has the moxie to be a big-time pitcher. I think he bounces back nicely, and his WHIP will look more like 2007 and 2008—1.124 and 1.08 respectively—than the 1.29 he posted last year.

Hiroki Kuroda, Los Angeles Dodgers

Kuroda posted an impressive 1.14 WHIP last year. He was, however, limited to 20 starts. He has just 17 wins in two seasons, which will make him a late draft pick. You’ll be happy with the value he brings.

Ted Lilly, Chicago Cubs

I don’t think Lilly is as good as his 1.06 2009 WHIP suggests, but a WHIP around 1.20 is not out of the question.

Ricky Nolasco, Florida Marlins

Ricky had a 5.06 ERA last year but still managed a 1.25 WHIP. He had a 1.10 WHIP in 2008, so clearly he has the goods.

Roy Oswalt, Houston Astros

Oswalt is coming off a down year, but his WHIP was solid (1.24). Expect it to be in the 1.20 range, which is his career number.

James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays

Shields’ WHIP ballooned to 1.325 last year, but he posted WHIPs of 1.11 and 1.15 the previous two seasons. Look for Shields to bounce back this year and be a good value pick in the process.

Kevin Slowey, Minnesota Twins

A lot will depend on his health, but Slowey simply does not walk batters. As long as he can keep the hits down like in 2008, he should have a nice WHIP.
