Alexander vs. Urango: Boxing Weekend Preview

Tyler CurtisMar 4, 2010

March gets off to a good start as this weekend in boxing is action-packed. There will be a little bit of everything this weekend, so let's get right to it.

Mar. 5

ESPN Friday Night Fights

TOP NEWS

Colts Jaguars Football

Martin Honorio (27-4-1 14 KO) vs. Wilton Hilario (12-0-1 9 KO) (lightweight)

Rico Ramos (14-0, 8 KO) vs. Cecilio Santos (24-12-3, 14 KO) (junior featherweight)

This card has an interesting main event as Martin Honorio is coming off his best win, handing John Molina his first career defeat, and he is fighting another solid undefeated prospect. Honorio will be looking for his fourth straight win, while Hilario is looking to stay undefeated.

This is the second straight TV fight for Honorio, so he is going to want to make the most of it. This is by far the best opponent, so he will be looking to make a statement on national TV.

The only undercard fight to keep an eye on is the up and coming Rico Ramos. He is facing an experienced opponent and is looking to continue his rise in the ranks.

Just a quick note here: John Molina is fighting his first fight since the loss to Honorio on the under card. Honorio was the opponent to Molina and now Molina is the under card fighter. Funny how things work sometimes.

Mar. 6

HBO

Devon Alexander (19-0 12) vs. Juan Urango (22-2-1 17 KO) (WBC/IBF junior welterweight unification)

The only fight on this card worth watching is the main event, and boy it's going to be a good one. I think this fight should be a barnburner.

Alexander is a young up and comer who already has a belt, and Urango is a proven fighter. Both have some pop, and Urango comes straight at you.

This will be the best fighter Alexander has faced thus far, and it will be interesting to see how he deals with the pressure Urango puts on him.

This is the second top-tier opponent Alexander has faced and his second straight TV fight, so he can deal with the pressure.

This is his first main event and that may get to him some, but I don’t think so. This should be a good fight and I think it can be an early Fight of The Year candidate.

Showtime

Vic Darchinyan (33-2-1 27 KO) vs. Rodrigo Guerrero (13-1-1 9 KO) (WBC/WBA junior bantamweight championship)

Leonardo Zappavigna (22-0 15 KO) vs. Fernando Angulo (22-6 14 KO) (lightweight)

One of my personal favorites, Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan, steps into the ring to defend his WBC/WBA juinor bantamweight titles. He is fighting a streaking guy in Guerrero, who has won 11 in a row.

The only quality win in those 11 is against former world title challenger and Darchinyan victim, Luis Maldonado. Guerrero doesn’t have the big time fight experience that Darchinyan has, and this is his first fight in the US.

Look for a easy KO win for Darchinyan, who is staying busy and trying to position himself for bigger fights.

The co-feature pits Zappavigna against Angulo in an IBO international lightweight title fight. Zappavigna is a up-and-coming prospect with some solid wins on his ledger. Angulo is just an opponent who has lost two in a row.

Saul Alvarez (30-0-1 22 KO) is fighting Brian “The Golden Greek” Camechis (19-2 8 KO) in a NABF welterweight title fight.

Alvarez is putting his unbeaten record on the line against a solid but average opponent. Other than having a sweet nickname, Camechis doesn’t bring much to threaten Alvarez.

This fight can be seen for free, live on WBCBoxing.tv at 11:30 PM EST.

NEWS AND NOTES

Kaizer Mabuza is coming off a career-best win against Kendall Holt and according to his promoter, wants to go against bigger fish as he wants the Alexander Urango winner. He is only rated No. 13 by the IBF.

Alexander Povetkin will meet Jaiver Mora on Mar. 13. He will be risking his IBF No. 1 status.

According to Gary Shaw, Chad Dawson’s (29-0 17 KO) fight against WBC Light Heavyweight Champion Jean Pascal (25-1 16 KO) will take place Aug. 14 in Montreal on HBO.
