NEW JERSEY DEVILS

TOP NEWS

NHL Mock Draft
Kucherov Landing Spots

GET:

L Ilya Kovalchuk
D Anssi Salmela
D Martin Skoula
2010 Second Round Pick from ATL

LOSE:

F Niclas Bergfors
F Patrice Cormier
D Johnny Oduya
2010 First Round Pick
2010 Second Round Pick
2010 Fifth Round Pick

They moved dangerous prospect Patrice Cormier, and lose some talented kids in Bergfors and Oduya, but how can you say no to the name of Ilya Kovalchuk?

The question is now, is Ilya Kovalchuk gonna finally get to show off his talents in the playoffs with the Devils, or will the Devils once again meet an early exit?

NEW YORK ISLANDERS

GET:

D Dylan Reese
2010 Second Round Pick from OTT

LOSE:

R Greg Moore
D Andy Sutton

Very quiet at the deadline the Islanders were the Atlantic Divisions worst trade deadline team, not improving on much of anything. They did get rid of Andy Sutton and obtain a top 60 pick in the draft from Ottawa .

NEW YORK RANGERS

GET:

D Anders Eriksson
F Olli Jokinen
C Kris Newbury
F Brandon Prust
F Jody Shelley

LOSE:

F Christopher Higgins
F Ales Kotalik
L Jordan Owens
G Miika Wiikman
2010 Seventh Round Pick
Conditional Fifth or Sixth Round Pick

Their biggest moves were before the actual deadline in acquiring Olli Jokinen, who has started off decent in Broadway.

They made minor scrap moves at the deadline, but in the end, New York Rangers fans should be happy with the young group they got.

A Young peoples movement in New York might work, lets see!

PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

GET:

F Ville Leino

LOSE:

D Ole-Kristian Tollefson
2011 Fifth Round Pick

Ville Leino is a talented kid at the age of 26. He made a name for himself in SM-lliga in Finland, and has a lot of potential but has not reached full potential yet.

Philadelphia is giving Ville a shot in his second full season in the NHL , now let's see how he can do on the Flyers.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS

GET:

D Jordan Leopold
L Alexei Ponikarovsky
D Steve Wagner
2010 Sixth Round Pick from TOR

LOSE:

L Luca Caputi
D Nathan Guenin
D Chris Peluso
D Martin Skoula
2010 Second Round Pick from FLA

Pittsburgh may have been the ultimate winners on Deadline Day '10.

They added depth at defense with Leopald, and won the waiting game as well.

They had a deal wrapped up with Carolina to send Whitney to Pittsburgh, waited out, and got a talented kid by the name of Alexei Ponikarovsky—10 years younger and heading to a winning team.

Can Poni ride the success and help out the Penguins in the playoffs?

NORTHEAST DIVISION:

Biggest Move: Raffi Torres, Buffalo Sabres
Best Team: Boston Bruins
Worst Team: Montreal Canadiens

BOSTON BRUINS

GET:

D Matt Bartkowski
D Steven Kampfer
D Dennis Seidenberg
D Cody Wild

LOSE:

R Byron Bitz
L Matt Marquardt
R Craig Weller
2010 Second Round Pick
2010 or 2011 Fourth Round Pick

What they lose in young talent they make up with leadership in Dennis Seidenberg.

Seidenberg played for Germany in the Winter Olympics this year, and has also been apart of many playoff seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes, including last season.

His experience could help the defensive core in Boston.

BUFFALO SABRES

GET:

F Raffi Torres
2010 Third Round Pick from ATL
2010 Fourth Round Pick from ATL

LOSE:

L Clarke MacArthur
D Nathan Paetsch
2010 Second Round Pick

It's hard to figure out exactly if the Sabres were buyers or sellers.

They traded 24-year-old Clarke MacArthur, who in his third season is about to have his second straight 15 goal season for the Sabres.

Since Raffi Torres' breakout season with the Oilers in 2006-2007, Torres' stats have subsided. The 28-year-old forward still has a hard work effort as a plus, he should be a nice fit in Buffalo.

MONTREAL CANADIENS

GET:

F Dominic Moore

LOSE:

2011 Second Round Pick

The 29-year-old Dominic Moore had a breakout year last season for Toronto .

He made his way on the trade block and was traded to Buffalo at the deadline; his stats hit a screeching hault. Moore signed in the offseason with Florida to be traded to Montreal.

Will being in Canada rejuvinate his hockey career, or will Montreal prove they overpaid for Moore by sending their top 60 pick to Florida?

OTTAWA SENTATORS

GET:

C Matt Cullen
D Andy Sutton

LOSE:

D Alex Picard
2010 Second Round Pick

Matt Cullen is a Stanley Cup winning champion with the Carolina Hurricanes. He will be trying to push his leadership towards the Senators as they push towards a playoff run.

Andy Sutton also helps the defensive front as his 6'6" tough guy frame could help the Senators in the longrun.

Let's see how the Senators do.

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

GET:

D Keith Aulie
L Luca Caputi
G Jean-Sebastien Giguere
D Matt Jones
D Chris Peluso
D Dion Phaneuf
F Fredrik Sjostrom
2010 Fourth Round Pick from PHO
2010 Fifth Round Pick from NJ
2010 Seventh Round Pick from PHO
2011 Seventh Round Pick from ANA

LOSE:

F Jason Blake
F Niklas Hagman
G Joey Macdonald
F Jamal Mayers
L Alexei Ponikarovsky
F Matt Stajan
F Lee Stepniak
G Vesa Toskala
D Ian White
2010 Sixth Round Pick

Cleanup in Toronto, again.

Toronto racks up big contracts, just to throw them away. It should be interesting to see how the shakeup plays out for Toronto late.

Toronto native Luca Caputi will finally get a chance to shine in the NHL as well.

SOUTHEAST DIVISION:

Biggest Move: Joe Corvo, Washington Capitals
Best Team: Carolina Hurricanes
Best Steal: Teddy Purcell and 2010 Third Round Pick from LA for Jeff Halpern

ATLANTA THRASHERS

GET:

R Evgeny Artyukhin
F Niclas Bergfors
F Patrice Cormier
L Clarke MacArthur
D Johnny Oduya
D Ivan Vishnevskiy
2010 1st Round Pick from NJ
2010 2nd Round Pick from NJ
2010 4th Round Pick from DAL

LOSE:

F Ilya Kovalchuk
G Kari Lehtonen
D Nathan Oystrick
D Anssi Salmela
2010 2nd Round Pick
2010 3rd Round Pick
2010 4th Round Pick
2011 Conditional Draft Pick

It was a very confusing deadline period for the Thrashers .

They traded to get Evgeni Artyukhin, and they get a big name of Clarke MacArthur late at the deadline giving up two picks for him.

They did receive top Dallas prospect Ivan Vishnevskiy as well.

Atlanta has a bunch of prospects, but how far will they take this team?

CAROLINA HURRICANES

GET:

F Cedric Lalonde-Mcnicoll
F Oskar Osala
D Alex Picard
D Brian Pothier
G Justin Pogge
2010 2nd Round Pick from OTT
2010 2nd Round Pick from SJ
2010 3rd Round Pick from VAN
2010 6th Round Pick from COL
2010 or 2011 4th round pick from BOSTON
2010 7th Round Pick from WAS
2011 2nd Round Pick from WAS

LOSE:

D Andrew Alberts
D Joe Corvo
C Matt Cullen
F Harrison Reed
R Scott Walker
D Niclas Wallin
D Aaron Ward
F Stephane Yelle

It was a very rewarding trade period for the Carolina Hurricanes.

They traded away a bunch of deadweight and currently have four top 60 picks in next year's draft.

As well as receiving Oskar Osala, who has 100 points in the AHL in his last two seasons, they also go Justin Pogge, who Toronto considered a lost cause trading him to Anahiem not giving him a chance to shine.

They were the oldest opening day roster in the NHL this season, and they just traded away six players over the age of 30.

Like I said, very rewarding.

FLORIDA PANTHERS

GET:

R Byron Bitz
D Mathieu Roy
R Craig Weller
2010 Second Round Pick from BOS
2010 Second Round Pick from PIT
2011 Second Round Pick from MON

LOSE:

D Matt Bartkowski
D Jordan Leopold
F Dominic Moore
F Matt Rust
D Dennis Seidenberg

They obtained two top 60 picks in the draft, and gave away Leopold and Seidenberg.

This team still lacks offensive firepower. Nothing else to say about the Panthers minus the fact Vokoun is still stuck in Sunrise.

One day Vokoun will get to show off his actual talents in the NHL—hopefully on a winning team.

TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

GET:

F Teddy Purcell
Third  Round Pick from LA

LOSE:

F Jeff Halpern

It was quiet trade period for the Lightning .

They gain a relatively young Ted Purcell from Los Angeles for a veteran Jeff Halpern.

Purcell has more upside than downside as his first two seasons have been dismal. The Lightning are hoping Purcell can find his talent in Tampa Bay.

WASHINGTON CAPITALS:

GET:
F Eric Belanger
F Jason Chimera
D Joe Corvo
R Scott Walker

LOSE:
F Chris Clark
F Oskar Osala
D Brian Pothier
2010 Second Round Pick
2011 Second Round Pick
2010 Sixth Round Pick
2010 Seventh Round Pick

Washington hires two solid veterans in Scott Walker in Eric Belanger and they give up essentially a bunch of solid draft picks.

They got a steal in getting Walker for a seventh rounder, but may have paid too much for Belanger by sending a second round pick to Minnesota.

Joe Corvo has the offensive firepower at defenseman that could fit right into Washington's style of play. He is fighting back from laceration injury earlier this season, but he should play just fine in Washington.

CENTRAL DIVISION:

Biggest Move: Denis Grebeshkov, Nashville Predators
Best Team: Nashville Predators
Biggest Steal: Matt D'Agostini to St. Louis for Aaron Palushaj

CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS

GET:

D Nick Boynton
D Danny Richmond
G Hannu Toivonen

Lose:

G Joe Fallon
Future Considerations to Anahiem

It was relatively quiet for Chicago .

Nick Boynton provides a physical style to Chicago, but may not even be on Chicago's top six defenseman.

Not much else to comment on.

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

GET:

F Chris Clark
F Chad Kolarik
D Nathan Paetsch
R Greg Moore
F Matt Rust
2010 Second Round Pick from BUF
2010 Sixth Round Pick from WAS
2010 Seventh Round Pick from LA
Conditional Draft Pick from LA

LOSE:

F Jason Chimera
F Fredrik Modin
F Alex Picard
D Dylan Reese
D Mathieu Roy
F Raffi Torres

Columbus proved to be sellers at the deadline getting rid of Jason Chimera, Fredrik Modin, and Raffi Torres.

They gain some young talent in Paetsch and Kolarik. It should be interesting to see how they play.

DETROIT RED WINGS

GET:

L Jordan Owens
D Ole-Kristian Tollefson
2011 5th Round Pick from PHI

LOSE:
F Ville Leino
C Kris Newbury

Nothing much on Detroits front.

They got Norweigein Olympian Ole-Kristian Tollefson from Philadelphia and gave up young Ville Leino.

Pretty even deal, let's see how Detroit plays out the rest of the season.

NASHVILLE PREDATORS

GET:
F Dustin Boyd
D Denis Grebeshkov

LOSE:
2010 Second Round Pick
2010 Fourth Round Pick

Nashville risked a lot when they gave away two picks in the draft away for unrestricted free agents Dustin Boyd and Denis Grebeshkov. Grebeshkov played for Russia in the Olympics.

Both are two-way players; however, Grebeshkov has the higher upside.

Dustin Boyd has yet to prove himself in Calgary and should be an interesting fit in Nashville.

ST LOUIS BLUES

GET:

R Matt D'Agostini
G Joe Fallon
D Nathan Guenin
L Pierre-Cedric Labrie

LOSE:

R Aaron Palushaj
D Danny Richmond
C Yan Stastny
G Hannu Toivonen
D Steve Wagner

St. Louis traded away a bunch of prospects in this draft.

The one name that sticks out is Matt D'Agostini who is having a poor outing in Montreal this season after a breakout year last season. He has four points in 40 games for Montreal, but should be a fit in St. Louis.

NORTHWEST DIVISION:

Biggest Move: Ryan Whitney, Edmonton Oilers
Best Team: Calgary Flames
Worst Team: Minnesota Wild

CALGARY FLAMES

GET:

F Niklas Hagman
F Christopher Higgins
F Ales Kotalik
F Jamal Mayers
F Matt Stajan
D Steve Staois
G Vesa Toskala
D Ian White
2010 Fourth Round Pick

LOSE:

D Keith Aulie
F Dustin Boyd
D Aaron Johnson
F Olli Jokinen
G Curtis McElhinney
D Dion Phaneuf
F Brandon Prust
F Fredrik Sjostrom
2010 or 2011 Third Round Pick

Lots of movement, however the biggest movement in my opinion was Calgary snagging Vesa Toskala.

Vesa should fit into Calgary's system seeing as he finally doesn't have to deal with all the pressure of being a goaltender in the NHL like before.

He is now sitting behind top-pier goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff.

COLORADO AVALANCHE:

GET:

R Peter Mueller
F Harrison Reed
F Kevin Porter
F Stephane Yelle

LOSE:

F Cedric Lalonde-Mcnicoll
L Wojtek Wolski
2010 Sixth Round Pick

Surprise move of the day was Colorado trading away Wojtek Wolski to Phoenix for Mueller and Porter. However, another surprise move was the Avalanche bringing back veteran forward Stephane Yelle to the system.

He is with a bunch of young and talented players on Colorado and should help out the young talent.

EDMONTON OILERS

GET:
L Matt Marquardt
D Aaron Johnson
D Ryan Whitney
2010 Second Round Pick from NAS
2010 or 2011 Third Round Pick from CAL

LOSE:
D Denis Grebeshkov
D Steve Staois
D Lubomir Visnovsky
D Cody Wild

Edmonton got a young and talented silver medalist by the name of Ryan Whitney as they had the biggest move of the day.

Whitney is younger, less expensive, and played in the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh.

Edmonton's day was shattered early as Sheldon Souray was not able to be traded due to an infection but the move late definitly lifted some spirits in Edmonton.

MINNESOTA WILD

GET:

D Cam Barker
2010 Second Round Pick from WAS

LOSE:
F Eric Belanger
D Kim Johnson
D Nick Leddy

In a quiet day, the biggest move may have been a steal as they obtained a 2010 second round pick from Washington for Eric Belanger.

Other than that, nothing is new in Minnesota.

VANCOUVER CANUCKS

GET:

D Andrew Alberts
C Yan Stastny
D Sean Zimmerman
2010 Conditional sixth round pick

LOSE:

L Pierre-Cedric Labrie
D Mathieu Schneider
2010 third round pick

Vancouver obtained big defenseman Andrew Alberts from Carolina and also got veteran center from St. Louis Yan Stastny.

Andrew Alberts should fit into Vancouver's rough and tough style very well.

PACIFIC DIVISION:

Biggest Name: Wojtek Wolski, Phoenix Coyotes
Best Team: Phoenix Coyotes
Worst Team: Dallas Stars

ANAHEIM DUCKS

GET:

F Jason Blake
G Joey MacDonald
G Curtis McElhinney
D Lubomir Visnovsky
D Aaron Ward
2010 Sixth Round Pick from PHO

LOSE:

G Jean-Sebastien Giguere
D Steven Kampfer
F Petteri Nokelainen
G Justin Pogge
D Ryan Whitney
2011 Seventh Round Pick

Anahiem got two literally BIG names at the deadline getting veteran Aaron Ward and Lubomir Visnovsky at the deadline. The two defenseman are solid veterans with upsides.

Aaron Ward has a Stanley Cup championship in Carolina, and Lubomir Visnovsky has an offensive plus side.

The question is, can Jonas Hiller carry the club all by himself, because who is the proven backup on Anahiem?

DALLAS STARS

GET:

G Kari Lehtonen

LOSE:

D Ivan Vishnevskiy
2010 Fourth Round pick

They lose top prospect Ivan Vishnevskiy and gain Kari Lehtonen.

Nothing else to say here.

They sent Auld to the Rangers through waivers to Lehtonen is gonna be backing up Turco.

Or will it be the other way around? Does it matter?

LOS ANGELES KINGS:

GET:

F Jeff Halpern
F Fredrik Modin

LOSE:

F Teddy Purcell
2010 Third round pick
2010 Seventh round pick
Conditional Draft Pick

Los Angeles was buyers at the deadline getting veteran Jeff Halpern and Freddy Modin at the deadline.

Halpern has been around the block a few times and should help out a bunch of the young players in Los Angeles.

Modin has a defensive upside but doesn't have much offensive power.

The two veterans should be okay in Los Angeles though.

PHOENIX COYOTES

GET:

D Derek Morris
F Petteri Nokelainen
F Alex Picard
D Mathieu Schneider
F Lee Stepniak
G Miika Wiikman
F Wojtek Wolski
2011 Seventh Round Pick from NYR

LOSE:

D Anders Eriksson
F Chad Kolarik
F Peter Mueller
F Kevin Porter
D Sean Zimmerman
2010 Sixth Round Pick
2010 Conditional Sixth Round Pick
2011 Fourth Round Pick
Fourth round pick
Seventh round pick

Phoenix decided they wanted one more proven forward as they bring in Wojtek Wolski from Colorado.

They traded a bunch of prospects away at the deadline, and brought back a few familiar names and also received a few veterans as well.
