Walker DanielsMar 3, 2010

The NHL trade deadline is over and there have been plenty of moves made for the stretch run of the season. Let’s take a look at some impact trades.

Phoenix trades Forwards Peter Mueller and Kevin Porter to Colorado for forward Wojtek Wolski.

Wolski is a big addition for the Coyotes who also received defenseman Derek Morris today in an exchange for a 4th round pick next year. For the Avalanche, Wolski was second in goals (17) and points (47). Mueller has been a colossal disappointment this year with only four goals and 17 points and has been in the doghouse for most of the season. In his 3rd year in the league, the former 1st round pick will try to regain his rookie form when he scored 22 goals and had 54 points.

Online Sportsbook Review: Pittsburgh trades F Luca Caputi and D Martin Skoula for F Alexei Ponikarovsky

The Penguins got their guy. Ponikarovsky was tied for second on the Leafs with 41 points (19 G, 22A). He leaves for greener pastures where he will have tons of scoring opportunities playing with Canadian national hero Sidney Crosby and fellow Russian, center Evgeni Malkin. This may turn out to be the steal of the trade deadline as the Penguins needed another good scorer on the team. Skoula was later moved to the Devils for a 5th round pick. Caputi, 21, was a fourth round pick who has 22 goals and 23 assists a AHL Scranton Wilkes-Barre.

Sportsbook Boston trades F Byron Bitz, F Craig Weller and a 2nd round pick for Matthew Bartkowski and D Dennis Seidenberg

Dennis Seidenberg is the key in this deal. The Boston power play has struggled this season and point man Derek Morris was shipped out as the scapegoat of it. Seidenberg leads the NHL in blocked shots and will be a free agent this offseason. This frees up cap room for the Bruins as well as replaces Morris with a better player for the rest of the year.

Washington trades a second round pick to Minnesota for C Eric Belanger

The Capitals decided to add to their strength by getting an all-purpose center to add to their depth at forward. He will likely man the 3rd line as a center or winger as well as an option for the penalty kill and second power play unit. Belanger has 13 goals and 22 assists on the year.

Los Angeles trades F Teddy Purcell and a 3rd round pick to Tampa Bay for F Jeff Halpern

This is a big move for the Kings. Halpern will add the veteran presence and experience that the young Kings have lacked all year. Although he is no longer a premier scorer (9 goals, 8 assists), Halpern will be a welcome addition for the Kings. Teddy Purcell is a big young forward that has not gotten enough playing time with the playoff bound Kings. He will get a chance to show his stuff in Tampa for the rest of the year.
