Why Song, Diaby and Fabregas Have to Stay Fit If Arsenal are to Be Successful

Akhil VyasMar 3, 2010

This may be a very bold statement to make but if Song, Diaby and Fabregas were fit for 90% of the season, Arsenal would be top of the Premiership and five points clear.

Some will agree, and some will not agree but that’s my opinion. From the three, Diaby is the one who has missed the most amounts of games this season. Song has become such an important player for the Arsenal and this was highlighted by how disappointed the club were to see him leave for the African nation’s cup. Fabregas is simply the first name on the team sheet.

Alex Song gives that defensive shield in front of the back four and something we have missed since Flamini and Gilberto moved on. Song has improved his passing game and the timing of his tackles and has become a more established player. A lot of credit must be given to Arsene Wenger for not doing what most pundits and fans said and launch into the transfer market and buy a ready made player.

Abou Diaby gives us something different in the middle of the park. His long legs, his towering leap and tackling ability gives us a box to box, ball winning midfield player and that’s something we have not had since the great Patrick Vieira moved away from North London in 2005. He has added goals to his game and that has certainly helped him become a fan favourite.

Cesc Fabregas has the ability and talent to dominate the modern game for years to come. I do think that he will end up at his boyhood team Barcelona one day, but hope that day is not in the near future. Cesc has goals, a wide range of passing, awareness, determination and lots more and that’s all you can ask for in your main play maker.

I feel that these three are the best three to play in our current formation. We have other players who have come in and done well. Denilson had a great season last year but is very similar to Fabregas. He has played in the Alex Song position but to be fair, Denilson is not a defensive midfielder as he loves to get forward. Denilson is perfect for the Fabregas position or the Diaby position. Aaron Ramsey looks like he can also play in the Fabregas or Diaby role and has done fantastically in the games he has played; however, Song, Diaby and Fabregas are the best trio purely because they offer something different. Each of them has a role and a different job and that’s why I believe this is our best midfield.

Alex Song is suspended for two games and the break will do him a world of good, but once he his back, I would love to see the trio play the remaining league and Champions league games because I believe with them fully fit and playing well, Arsenal have a real chance in both competitions.

Most big games are won in the midfield; we all remember how Arsenal VS Manchester United was over shadowed by Roy Keane VS Patrick Vieira. This was because of how important that contest was.

Comparing our midfield to other midfields in our league and I think ours compares pretty well. With them three in the team we can dominate games and I also think they know how to protect the back four when needed and know how to cut of supply to the opposition’s front line. The hardest two games we have left are Man City at home and Spurs away and in those two games, cutting off supply to attackers is key.

So for me, the title could come down to whose midfield can stay fit and fire. In our case, its even more important, with Van Persie out, we don’t have an attacker who can create something out of nothing unlike Chelsea who have Drogba and Manchester United who have Rooney, But Arsenal do have Fabregas, so as long as Song and Diaby do their jobs well and let the little magician play then Arsenal have got a great chance.

Come on the Arsenal.
