Emiliano Insua : This Buff Argentine Could Go All The Way!

Shree Ganesh RajendranMar 2, 2010

When Rafa Benitez gave young Argentine leftback Emiliano Insua his Reds debut against Portsmouth three years ago, many were interested and at the same time shocked to see Rafa make a suprising move. Benitez also gave Nabil El-Zhar his debut in that game. That was the time when Liverpool were busy preparing for a Champions League semi-final match against Chelsea.

Due to that,Rafa had to rest his first team charges so that they would be prepared to face the Blues. That move worked as Liverpool reached the final only to be beaten by Carlo Ancelloti's AC Milan.

Insua did not make much of an impact in that game against Pompey albeit that game not being vital as Liverpool were practically out of the title race. However, he did provide a glimmer of hope that he could one day be Liverpool's first choice left-back.

After that game, this 21 year old spent the following season helping Liverpool reserves to win the league.

It was not until the 2008-09 season that Insua began to hold down a place in Rafa Benitez's first team plans notching up a impressive total of 13 appearences mainly due to Fabio Aurelio's niggling injuries and Andrea Dossena's erratic form.

This season has been a different story all together. Insua has 26 appearences in the league now and is improving game by game. That stat surely states that Insua is Rafa's first choice left-back. Having scored his first and so far only goal in a Red shirt against Arsenal in the Carling Cup, that should just spur this left-back who hails from Buenos Aires, Argentina to go on and on. Coupled with that, his 5 assists in the league would surely be noted by opposing teams.

Known for his attacking prowess and crossing ability, the buff Emiliano won his first cap for Argentina under the guidance of  former local hero, Diego Maradona in the tension-filled World Cup qualifying match against neighbours Peru.

Insua may not be in the same league as United's Evra, Chelsea's Ashley Cole and Arsenal's Clichy. Just give him more time and he would one day be in that same bracket as those world-class players.

Being in the same team alongside fellow countrymen Javier Mascherano and Maxi Rodriguez, Insua would surely feel at home.

Insua has recently stressed the importance of finishing fourth and if this capable left-back continues to give his best, that objective does not look a distinct possiblity at all.
