Here are six teams that are on the bubble and why I think they will be in the field of 65 or looking forward to playing in the NIT.
Georgia Tech Yellow jackets: At one time the Yellow Jackets were ranked in the top 25 and they looked like they were a lock to make it to the field of 65 but then they struggled down the stretch. What really hurt is losing to other teams that are on the bubble and attempting to get into the big dance like Florida St and Maryland. They have only won twice in the last five games and have looked dreadful on the road. The big glaring spot on their resume is that they have only one road win vs. teams in the RPI top 100. Unless they stun in the ACC conference the Yellow jackets will not get an invite.
Georgia Tech: OUT
Louisville Cardinals: The Cardinals may have locked in the invite with a win over the Huskies which made for a season sweep against Connecticut. They have a strong RPI and are in the top ten with strength of schedule. They beat Syracuse and have an impressive enough resume to get in. If they get one more win it is guaranteed and that could happen against Marquette. Pitino will get his team ready to impress in the tournament and they get the call.
Louisville: IN
Oklahoma St Cowboys: The Big 12 is one of the best conferences in college basketball but do they have enough invites to include the Cowboys? They have impressive wins against Kansas St, Baylor and the big win they just pulled off against Kansas may have punched the ticket for this team. The problem is they have a 5-7 mark vs. teams in the RPI top 100. 15 wins vs. teams outside the RPI top 100, four outside the top 200. They need one more to lock it up but the win against Kansas will go along way.
Oklahoma St: IN
Washington Huskies: They have a great strength of schedule facing non conference teams but they struggle mightily on the road. They are just 2-7 on road and neutral court games. They need more wins to get the committee to let them in but they play the rest of the schedule on the road and that does not look good for Washington.
Washington: OUT
Florida Gators: That loss to Georgia has to hurt because the Gators looked like they were a lock to get the nod to the Big dance. Now they may need another win and they have Vanderbilt and Kentucky on the schedule. They have some great Wins of note: vs. Tennessee, vs. Michigan State (neutral), vs. Florida State, at Mississippi, vs. Mississippi State. This should be enough to get them in and if they win a game against Vanderbilt or Kentucky they are a into the field of 65.
Florida: IN
Connecticut Huskies: This has been a tough season for the Huskies and you have to wonder if the committee members will take being without Coach Calhoun into consideration when they judge the Huskies. The resume is not that pretty. They have a 4-7 mark vs. teams inside the RPI top 50.and a 3-8 record in road/neutral games. They were swept by fellow bubble team Cincinnati and have a few objectionable losses to include at Providence, at Michigan. With two road games left they could lose one and that would mean they take a pass on UConn.
Connecticut: OUT
