Arsenal Debate: Should Carlos Vela Have Been Sent on Loan This Season?

Callum D'SouzaMar 2, 2010

When Arsenal took on lowly Sheffield United in the League Cup last season one of the most exciting and talented young forwards was discovered. Mexican Carlos Vela. A youthful Arsenal side thumped Sheffield 6-0 with Carlos Vela bagging a sensational hat trick that ensured many sides stood up and watched the young Mexican.

Vela then performed strongly in the next round of the Cup, scoring a superb chip goal against Wigan. The young Gunners went on to win 3-0 but were sadly dumped out of the League Cup in the next round.

But apart from a classy goal against Portsmouth at the death of last season, the Mexican international has failed to really perform for Arsenal. It would seem Arsene Wenger has little faith in the diminutive 21 year old. Although injury's have played their part this season, Carlos Vela's development seems to be hampering under Wenger.

With only a mere 17 appearances this season, 12 off the bench, Vela is lacking opportunity to prove himself to Wenger and nail down a birth in the Arsenal side.

Should Vela have been sent on loan?

The Mexican striker has blistering pace and balance along with a fierce shot. Combined with great tricks and the ability to be cool whilst in-front of goal, it's easy to see why the former Osasuna forward is a handful to defend.

But with Wenger opting not to send out the Mexican on loan to gain to valuable experience despite severe interest from the likes of Fulham. Vela's development may have been slightly halted for now.

However, Vela has signed a long-term contract and it is obvious he will one day grace the Arsenal starting XI striking fear into the hearts of defenders but for now he is warming the bench at Arsenal.
