Serena Cant Go On Forever One Of You Will Have To Step Up To The Plate

Jack JohnsonMar 1, 2010

Despite not always being number one in the world, Serena Williams has always been up there. The current number one female is a dominant force on the court arguably leaving the others in her shadow.

Although only 28 years old, there needs to be a replacement. Therefore this article wont be bigging up Williams but looking at potential players that can take the number one spot away from her.

Candidate number one: Caroline Wozniacki (current WTA Rank: 4)

Wozniacki has come on leaps and bounds since turning pro in 2005. The 19 year old Dane has won six WTA tour events to date and was defeated by Kim Clijsters in the final of the 2009 US Open. Wozniaki is a player to watch for the future and with experience in a grand slam final she could challenge Serena for that number one spot.

Candidate number 2: Svetlana Kuznetsova (current WTA Rank: 3)

The Russian has been in the top ten for a while now after wins in the 2004 US Open and 2009 French Open. Kuznetsova was also defeated by Justin Henin in the 2006 French Open and the 2007 US Open but her strong presence in the major grand slams shows her strong will to succeed. Definitely a contender.

Candidate number 3: Victoria Azarenka (current WTA Rank: 6)

Azarenka won three singles titles in 2009 and with strong performances in recent grand slams including quarter final finishes at Wimbledon and the French Open, the Belarusian is a promising young player. She is sure to have a say in the number one spot over the next couple of years.

The Former Number Ones:

Jelena Jankovic (current WTA Rank: 9)

Jankovic lasted 17 weeks as number one in 2008, but is still yet to win a grand slam in her career. However, time is on her side and the 25 year old has been a regular in the top ten for the last three years.

Dinara Safina (current WTA Rank: 2)

Safina arguably has the best chance of challenging Serena for number one. She has been in three grand slam finals but the only things that let her down are her major faults. Safina's serve isnt the strongest and she hates the grass courts. If Safina is to be number one again she needs to take full advantage of the hard court season just like she did last year.

Venus Williams (current WTA Rank: 5)

Although older than her sister Serena, Venus is still a major contender who I couldnt resist putting in this list. Venus has won seven grand slam singles titles and has won 43 career titles. She is a big candidate to challenge her sister but her career is nearing an end unlike the other players mentioned.

Maria Sharapova (current WTA Rank: 13)

Since coming back from injury, Sharapova has returned to the top 20 with ease. Blessed with powerful groundstrokes the Russian still has the potential to be number one. With two grand slam titles to her name Sharapova has the experience and sheer will to succeed.

Ana Ivanovic (current WTA Rank: 27)

This is arguably the strangest candidate for number one in this list but Ivanovic still has the potential to be great. A huge drop in confidence and a couple of injuries has seen the Serb drop from the top spot to outside the top 20 in just over a year and a half but at just 22 years old time is on her side. Ivanovic is slowly coming back and still has the guts and the determination to succeed in tennis.
